Tomato Contract To Assure Prices For Farmers
Denton county agent George W. Clendaniel says the Federal Government backs contracting tomatoes over selling on the open market to guarantee farmers 35 cents per five-eighth bushel. Canners resisting contracts favor open market prices, which averaged about 30 to 40 cents in various sections last year. The War Department requires 33 percent of a canner’s pack be set aside, with the rest sold to the government at 95 cents a dozen if 75 percent of plant capacity is contracted at 35 cents. Canners without contracts would be paid 92 percent of the Secretary of Agriculture’s price, and must provide sworn cost data.

More than 160 teachers and regular students enrolled for the first summer session at the State Teachers College at Salisbury. About fifty in service teachers joined the six week session and thirty-five for the ten week session, with twenty-four sophomores twenty-two juniors and thirty-two seniors returning under the accelerated program.
