The Babylonian king installs Zedekiah, who rebels and seeks Egypt. Nebuchadnezzar besieges Jerusalem for about eighteen months, famine ravages the city, and the wall breaks. Zedekiah flees to avoid capture but is captured at Jericho, brought to Riblah, and punished by Nebuchadnezzar. Jerusalem is destroyed, the Temple burned, walls torn down, and most residents taken to Babylon with Gedaliah appointed governor over remaining land.
