Samuel Nowell of Denton was injured late Monday afternoon when his car veered after he apparently fell asleep on Route 313 one mile north of Denton. He was taken to Memorial Hospital Easton as other mishaps involved two vehicles on Route 213 and a crash at Sixth and Gay Streets. Total damage about 1550 dollars. Charges were not filed in Nowell’s case. Trial set for June 16 for the Sixth and Gay Streets collision.
Rev. George W. Goodley outlines health and safety plans for the 11th Annual Delmarva Chicken Festival to be held June 26 to 28. Facilities include Denton Health Center for first aid with nurses on duty, ambulances on site, rest rooms at three locations, portable facilities, ample drinking water, trash removal multiple times daily, and shaded seating areas around the grounds.
At the last regular Board of Education meeting the Ridgely kindergarten was approved for 1958 1959. Since Ridgely and Greensboro lacked enough enrollment, Greensboro parents joined Ridgely to form a single center, bringing total enrollment to 22 and enabling approval.
The 39th annual Kent and Sussex County Fair runs July 21 to 26 in Harrington with top 2 and 3 year old colt stakes boasting purses near 30000. Grandstand shows nightly by GAC Hamid with Joel Basile featuring big top music and fireworks. Children's Day on July 22 offers free admission for school children. Governors’ Day July 24 hosts Governor Boggs and staff, plus a giant livestock parade and candidate visitors. Prell's Broadway Shows headlines the midway all week.
Sarah Lane in the Junior Division and Mrs. R Dale Palmer with Mrs. Geo Lowe in the Senior Division are among 100 national contestants at the 1958 National Chicken Cooking Contest, held with the Delmarva Chicken Festival June 26 28 in Denton Maryland. Contestants come from 11 broiler states with Mrs K T Evengain of Denton as chair. Winners receive a handsome trophy.
The pupils of Mildred Fitzgerald present a recital on Tuesday evening June 17 at 8 o'clock in the Caroline High School auditorium. The public is cordially invited.
Coaches of the Denton teams invite boys not yet in Little League to Tuesday evening practices at the High School playground with another night to be named. The program aims to teach baseball skills, sportsmanship, and fun as a lead up to Little League, with exhibitions possible if 18 or more boys attend. On June 19 Bishop Miller and Mrs Miller depart for London to attend the Lambeth Conference convened by Anglican bishops worldwide.
Air Force Private William O. Anderson III of Federalsburg, 21, died in a motor vehicle accident in Woodbridge Virginia while riding in an Army truck. He enlisted October 1 1957 and had been at Fort Belvoir since April last year. Born in Easton he lived with his parents and two brothers. Funeral at Frampton Funeral Home with Rev. Donald O. Clendaniel officiating. Interment at Hill Crest Cemetery.
Four Maryland 4-H members Jerry Ensor Roberta Messer James Ray Hill and Howard Stiles will represent the United States in the international dairy judging contest July 1-3 in Bristol England. Coaches John Morris and M Gist Welling accompany them. The trip includes Scotland Devon Guernsey Jersey Brussels Copenhagen Holland Amsterdam and London with a return from Southampton on the SS United States. This is Maryland 4 Hs fifth win in England. A meeting with Social Security official Robert F O Regan is set for Denton June 16.
James R. Chaffinch Jr was unanimously elected a director at a Denton National Bank board meeting on June 10 1958 to fill the vacancy caused by J Lester Everngam's February death. Chaffinch, born in Denton, long served as bank secretary then cashier and holds PhB from Dickinson College. He is active in Rotary Chamber of Commerce and Christ Church.
Four Caroline County residents earned degrees at the University of Maryland commencement in College Park on June 7. Honorary doctorates were given to Johns Hopkins president Milton S. Eisenhower and others. Caroline graduates were Ernest A. Gerardi Jr of Federalsburg, Donald F. Marth of Preston, Gilbert M. Rogers of Federalsburg, and May W. Worme of Preston.
The first of four Zone Meetings in the Easton district will be held at Bethesda Church Preston on Thursday night June 19 at 745 p m. Mrs Wm Lennon Caroline County Zone Leader will lead a short worship service followed by an hour of training and discussion under district officers. Conference president Mrs Walter B Palmer will close with brief remarks and Mrs Wm Dore will offer the closing prayer.
First Methodist Church announces summer services starting June 15 with 9:00 a.m. Sunday School and 10:00 a.m. worship, continuing through August 31. Vacation Church School runs June 17 to 20, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with named teachers and a coordinating committee.
