Drought Influences Berry Shipments and Local Industry
Despite a severe drought the berry season spanned sixty four days with May 1 as the first crate date and May 20 the last. Crops including strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries suffered but remained fairly paying. Cannery plans advance as Dennison cannery to be equipped by Alex McKnatt and Gilbert Saunders, with Jarrell can making busy over winter and thousands of cans produced. Wheat yields were good, gum shipments to Ridgely basket factory rose, and farmers sold wheat locally. Prospects for tomatoes and corn look strong, rains aided crop growth, and several locals tied into new homes and visits while street lamps and a presiding elder’s visit loom.
