He witnessed Pearl Harbor and Midway combats. He is married to Rose Marie Morgan Roe of Denton. they have two sons. Roe served as lead mechanic on a bomber squadron and earned personal citations for his work.

The Sugar corn season nears and labor shortages push farmers to hire high school youths to harvest sweet corn. Last year towns used local youths with satisfactory results. Three officers and forty men of Company A Caroline county Maryland state guard will march from Denton next Sunday at 7 a.m. for ten days training at Camp Meade. Most men will go, four exempted to work on farms. Encampment includes Fifth Battalion with Cecil Kent Queen Annes Talbot and Caroline counties and Sixth Battalion with Dorchester Wicomico Somerset Worcester counties. Guard on duty 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. dress parade on Governor's Day July 29. Officers include Capt E Paul Knotts and First Lieut T Carville Fleetwood, with Second Lieut Andrew A Richardson.

Tornadic Storm Ravages Trappe and Easton Area
A tornadic storm wrecked the Trappe Cannery and damaged a new cinder block building. It tore the roof from the Shannahan Wrightson hardware store in Easton and felled power lines leaving 150 to 200 phones out. Debris filled streets and crops including tomatoes corn and sweet potatoes were wiped out in the region. No deaths or injuries were reported immediately.

Firehouse spared as lightning hits flagpole scene
Firehouse in Denton was not called to respond Sunday evening when a bolt struck the flagpole. Splinters and a blown fuse were noted, but the building remained intact. Two fire engines stood ready in their usual positions for any emergency.

Hicks Kenneth Gorsuch Hicks an aviation cadet pilot based at Garner Field Uvalde Texas enters service in August 1943. Born June 17 he is 18 and soloed four days before his 19th birthday. He previously drove a truck for his father and has lived in Greensboro Lexington San Antonio and is now in Uvalde with a centered photograph of Hicks.
