Maryland Canning Factories Face Serious Labor Shortage
A survey by Dr. S. H. De Vault and R. F. Burdette finds Maryland canning houses will hire about 11 000 workers in early July, rising to 24 500 by late August or early September. A labor gap peaks between August 20 and September 10. Canners expect a need for about 5 000 more workers than last year’s peak, risking crop handling if outside labor isn’t recruited. Women peeling tomatoes emerge as the tightest labor—though many housewives and students are available, few apply without adequate hourly pay.
