Caroline County launches a 1948 March of Dimes campaign aiming to raise 3500 to aid polio victims and support research. funds come from schools movies mail and clubs with local need highlighted by past cases and a National Foundation grant.
The local soccer scene features Stewart Cup action with Ridgely facing Queen Anne in a two game playoff series to be scheduled. Sunday’s schedule includes Batchelor's of Baltimore versus Ridge ly at 2 pm and other matches at Hancock Locust Point Elkton Pat terson Park and Latrobe bowl. The Denton and Kent Island clubs end their seasons after first round defeats, while Ridgely adds Kenney Bennington from Essex to bolster their bid for statewide play.
Middletown champions narrowly defeated the Denton Bobcats 29 to 24 in a defensive showdown. Harry Hughes starred for Denton with clutch rebounds and interceptions, while Davidson led Middletown with timely long-range shots in the second half. Proson led Denton with 8 points, Diffey 7, as Snecker and others contributed on both sides.
Important changes sweep the Mar Del League as the January 15 signing deadline closes. Harrington Legion adds Shalley Kayser, Lane and Legg boosting height and scoring. Denton Bobcats release Lane Legg sign Roberts. Chestertown adds Derham Camden adds Baldwin. Smyrna nets late wins over Milford and Chestertown as Middletown and Dover vie for top.
The Denton Cemetery Association held its annual meeting January 12 in the Eastern Shore Public Service Company Law Building office. Six of seven board members attended, led by Dr. Dawson O. George. The group voted to increase the board to nine members, electing H. Hackett Downes and Dr. J. R. Rochester as new members pending acceptance.
Mr and Mrs Charles A Murphy of Denton mark their sixty first wedding anniversary dating from January twentieth. Married in Burrsville by Rev W J D Lucas the couple have four children, twenty one grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren. Charles has long suffered failing health with Mrs Murphy caring for him at home.
The Denton Kittens defeated Felton 34 to 14 after a rough, defense dominated game and a prior loss to Easton. Denton, led by Smith and Welch, extended a 22 11 halftime edge as Felton struggled to crack Denton’s defense.
The third annual Cambridge Outdoor Show led by Cam bridge Chamber of Commerce and director Emmett Andrews will run February 5 to 7 at the National Guard Armory. Educational exhibits by federal and state agencies fill the armory right side while stage acts feature oyster shucking, muskrat skinning, a school conservation quiz, and a fashion show. Albert M. Day of the U S Fish and Wildlife Service will speak at a wildlife dinner February 6 with 250 reservations. Prizes total 175 dollars across events, with 50 dollars cash for conservation quiz and 100 dollars for muskrat skinning plus 25 dollars for oyster shucking.
The Denton National Bank held its sixty eighth annual stockholders meeting on Tuesday January 13 1948 in the bank board room. Nine shareholders serving as officials dined at the Brick Hotel prior to the meeting with M K Newnam as chairman and Gail F Cooper as secretary. Directors elected were J Roland Chaffinch Wilmer Fell Davis Joseph M Eaton Charles L Ellwanger J Lester Everngain Dawson O George Frank L R Nuttle and W Clark Quillen all receiving 925 of 1000 votes. J Roland Chaffinch was named president and J Lester Everngain vice president.
Southern States Cooperative will hold a two day district school January 27 28 in Salisbury Md to train agency personnel to assist farmers with farm problems and to better inform them about operations including feed formulation seed origin and marketing. The event includes the first annual district hybrid corn show with prizes for local winners Richard Langrell and Marion Spicher of Southern States Farmers Supply Cooperative Denton Md enrolled.
Caroline Post No 29 American Legion will host a dance at the Denton Armory on Friday February 6 1948 at 9 pm to raise funds for the Infantile Paralysis Fund. Admission is 120 including tax with Eddie Bray and his Washington College orchestra providing music for the seventh consecutive year.
Ink Brothers trio Lt Jim Teat Sgt Charles Horner and Cpl Charles Thetford perform for Company H Minstrel at Denton Armory January 26 27. Teat a World War II veteran from Marydel plays electric guitar Horner an old Navy vet and Thetford an army veteran sing and entertain with string music and vocals.
