Three Accidents Mar New Year In County
Three New Year crashes in upper Caroline County caused about $2,150 in damage and injured two people. At Route 313 and Whiteleysburg Road a Greensboro man failed to stop, rammed a 3 foot bank and rolled onto its left side, $550 in damage. Miss Carpenter and Ray Luff were injured near Henderson as Luff’s car hit Carpenter’s on Route 311. both treated by Dr. Stonesifer. Luff charged with failure to keep right. Later, Arthur Porter of Greensboro hit a parked Salisbury car, pushed it into a wall, then struck a tree. $1,350 damage and Porter charged with reckless driving.

Master Sergeant William L. Adlon of St. Aubins Centreville Road is assigned to the U S Army Recruiting Station in Easton by Major William W Cemanding Officer. A 20 year Army veteran Adlon brings guidance and counseling in Army careers with prior service in Pennsylvania and the U S Zone of Occupied Germany. He served with ROTC at Loyola College Baltimore and earlier with Pack Artillery in Panama and Fifth Army in Italy during World War II. Born January 1916 in Catasauqua Pa he is married to Rebecca J Gottwals. He will disseminate information from the Easton recruiting station at the American Legion Home.

Health Department Expands Loan Closet in Caroline County
The Caroline County Health Department has added eleven hospital beds and other items to its loan closet for home use by ill residents. Acquired through the Health Association and funded by Tag Day proceeds, the beds are available to any family with a sick member by calling the Health Department at Denton 56 or through health nurses.

Maryland Death Rate Reaches All Time Low in 1954
Maryland public health data show the 1954 overall death rate fell to 9.1 per thousand, 5.4 percent below the 3-year average, with notable declines in tuberculosis, syphilis, nephritis, heart disease, influenza pneumonia, and accidents. The colored population saw larger percentage drops, especially in tuberculosis and heart disease, while births hit a new 1954 high with projections near 65,000.

The Church of the Brethren in Denton began a parish hall addition with a ground breaking ceremony on Sunday January 2 after worship. The two story 30 by 50 foot structure will join the rear of the sanctuary and provide five class rooms a storage room and a fellowship hall.
