Many Postal Rates Up Beginning January 1st
The New Year brings postal rate hikes aimed at increasing Post Office Department revenue by 120 million dollars yearly. Penny post cards rise to two cents at 12:01 a.m. January 1, while letters stay unchanged. Changes cover parcel post, special delivery, insured and collect-on-delivery services, and second class mail with staged increases through 1954.

Messicks Celebrate 55 Years of Marriage at Harundale Dinner

The celebration ended with guests departing at 4 p m.

A noon fire destroyed the Nuttle Milling Co flour and feed mill in Denton. Estimated losses exceed 50 thousand dollars for the building, stock, and equipment, with insurance partially covering damages. Fire crews from Denton, Greensboro, Ridge Ly, and Hillsboro-Queen Anne responded to the blaze. The 38 year old business, run by M. G. Crouse and Frank L. R. Nuttle, faced its worst fire in recent years and stood on Market and Gay Streets where Keiffer’s mill once burned decades ago.

Tech Sgt. Joseph A. Adams announced December enlistments in the U S Army and Air Force. Twelve men from Denton Greensboro Ridgely and Oxford joined this month, including Allen Dyer Stanford Robert Almont Edwards and Charles Edward Boyd. Adams also announced a policy change allowing airmen with 18 months service and a high school diploma to apply to the cadet program, replacing the prior two-year college requirement.
