George M. Nelson, president of Eastern Shore Public Service, said the board approved the 1959 construction budget for the Delmarva Peninsula electric utility. Projects total about $12.5 million, expanding facilities and adding transmission lines and substations in Delaware and Maryland to boost capacity and provide a second feed to Ocean City, Bethany, and Rehoboth. The 14th straight year of expansion aims to meet growing demand and support local economic growth.

Grounded tanker Afri can Queen crew rescued at Ocean City
Forty five crewmen of the 13,800 ton tanker African Queen were airlifted to safety at Ocean City Maryland after the ship struck a shoal and broke in two. The captain and first mate stayed aboard briefly before being rescued by boat. The severed bow drifted ten miles offshore while the stern remained stuck on the shoal. Civil defense housed the crew in Ocean City Elementary School gymnasium overnight. The vessel had been bound from Colombia to Paulsboro with 200,000 barrels of crude oil.
