Ex Governor Ritchie Dies in Baltimore
Former Maryland governor Albert Cabell Ritchie died suddenly in Baltimore at age 59 after a stroke. He collapsed in his Washington Apartments home after addressing an Epworth League meeting and died en route to treatment despite oxygen and physician efforts. Ritchie, a longtime Democrat critic of the New Deal, had returned to private practice after losing a bid for a fifth term. He was born in Richmond on August 2, 1876.

Former Governor Albert C. Ritchie, a dominant figure in Maryland politics, dies after a career defining battles for cheaper gas and electricity, three terms as chief executive, and influence from 1910 to 1930. The Baltimore native rose from public counsel to national prominence as a staunch advocate of states rights and opposition to federal interference.
