The 23yearold David Jenkins faces trial in Caroline County Circuit Court for a meat cleaver slaying and a $3 hold up of a Baltimore grocery storekeeper. Jurors were chosen from 40 panel members plus outsiders, with opening statements expected today.
The Caroline County Business and Professional Women's Club invites Dr. Donald McKay Davies of Lincoln University as guest speaker on Wednesday evening February 26 1964. Davies spent ten years in Ethiopia as a missionary helping translate the Amharic Bible and recently received a leather bound Bible from the Ethiopian Emperor. He will discuss World Affairs with focus on Africa. Mrs. Mary DeWald, a local music teacher, is Davies daughter.
Caroline County teachers association backs Hughes Committee recommendations to raise state aid by 16.2 million via per pupil distribution, with Governor Tawes supporting bills SB 33 and HB 30. Tax hike from 3 to 4 percent on earned income would fund the plan, starting 1965, and boost state education and services alongside anticipated surplus funds.
The Denton Volunteer Fire Company announced its annual Honorary Membership campaign is under way with a mail drive that sent nearly 2500 letters to area families. A new equipment order will replace a 1939 model, and last year saw a record 102 fire alarms and 168 ambulance runs totaling over 9,000 miles and 403 hours. Co chairs are Charles T. Doc Baker and Frank Flack.
Mr. Lee W. Noble Jr announces 1964 Heart Fund Drive captains and volunteers across Caroline County. Volunteers visit neighbors to collect funds and leave educational materials on heart disease, with pre addressed envelopes for local Easton residents to donate to the Heart Association of the Upper Eastern Shore. Proceeds support heart and blood vessel disease research and education locally and nationally. District captains and special gifts chairs listed for eight districts and county leadership announced.
Cpl. Emil C. Myers, 36, plainclothes Maryland state police detective of Denton, was named Del Maritime Virginia Po liceman of the Year for 1963 at Salisbury on February 13. He was cited for intense duty and lengthy investigations solving several murders and cutting liquor sales to minors on the central shore.
David I. Rodgers, a Salisbury civic leader and assistant manager at First Shore Federal Savings & Loan, has been named Treasurer of State Senator Harry R. Hughes’ campaign for the First District seat. Rodgers, 34, serves on Salisbury City Council and has led local Jaycees and blood bank efforts. He resides at 303 S. Clairmont Drive, Salisbury.
Mr Robert Snedeker of the Social Security Administration will be at the Fire House in Denton on Monday February 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service aims to help residents with Social Security matters and benefit questions.
