James K. Cooper was elected president of the Denton Chamber of Commerce for the coming year at a monthly meeting held Thursday evening. He succeeds Benjamin F. Johnson Jr. Other officers named were L. Tayloe Lewis as vice president, Benjamin F. Johnson Jr. as secretary, and W. C. Siefkin as treasurer. The nominations were approved from a committee of Robert W. Downes Jr., Harold C. Towers, and S. Gilbert Hall. Dinner guests included Frank Gordy and Earl Hawk of the Delmarva Poultry Industry. John W. Asher Jr. reported excellent progress on the 1958 Festival. Walter G. Kerslake Jr. noted progress on Christmas lighting and presented the final bill. S. Gilbert Hall said the Parking Lot Committee would scrap plans for a larger area due to funds and site issues, and plans to purchase or improve the present lot were abandoned after the owner refused a sale or lease.

A woodlot management demonstration for farm woodlot owners in Talbot and Caroline Counties will be held Tuesday Feb 25 from 1 15 to 3 30 p m at Camp Mardela near Denton. Big Heavenly Show By Aurora Borealis Monday
Moreman observed the aurora borealis lighting the Maryland skies and extending to Florida with red pink green and yellow hues. The unusual display disrupted television and long distance lines while radio communications were upset and ships and airports issued alerts. The Weather Bureau attributed rare visibility to cold clear conditions as the display began around 9 p.m. and lasted until daylight.

Plaindealing Damaged By Fire In Denton Home
Denton Volunteer Fire Company answered an alarm Saturday morning to a fire at Plaindealing, a 175 year old Denton house owned by Mr and Mrs W Henry Brown. Built 1783 and restored recently, the blaze damaged the kitchen, an upstairs bedroom, and the roof. Repairs began early this week. On the same day the trailer home of Mr Frank Crane was destroyed by a fire believed caused by a kerosene lamp explosion.

Noted speakers included Dr. Chester McNerney of Penn State, Dr. Wilbur Devilbiss of Salisbury State Teachers College, and Dr. Daniel Prescott from the University of Maryland. A student and parent panel offered stimulating viewpoints. County teachers led discussion groups with many named leaders and recorders.
