Reminiscences Of Old Possum Hollow Days
The Journal recalls long gone sites and schools from Possum Hollow era. It covers 1873 town crosses, Chinquapin school origins, Gareys Piney Garey and Greenlee landmarks, and a stern teacher Mr. Fountain who ran a disciplined, multiage class with a central chimney and switches. Debating societies, stock law debates, and public lands shaped village life.
Central School and Church at Possum Hollow Remembered
Local citizens fostered religious services and a Sunday School in the old Wyatt schoolhouse, forming Central church. The Possum Hollow and Garey’s schools served the community, with mill life, a one-eighth toll, and winter skating era memories. The 1908 Electric Light Co site closed the era, replaced by modern roads and a nod to Judge Crothers’ vision.
