Maryland field experiments by the U S Department of Agriculture show Caroline County farmers cut soil loss by 2 1 and water loss by 75 and 50 percent respectively using contour or diversion terrace tillage. Contour strip cropping halves drainage costs and reduces runoff enabling smaller pipes. Across Delaware New Jersey and Maryland over a decade results indicate contour practices improve retention, fertility preservation and yields while reducing erosion. Soil and water loss is also linked to fertilizer loss and seed wash during spring rains. Assistance on erosion control planning is available from soil conservation districts.
