He says Kennedy’s proposed compensatory payments would be expensive, tighten production, and hinder needed market adjustments balancing supply and demand. State Trooper Activity During The Past Week

The State Police report for the past week lists accidents on Feb 4 at 10:30 pm a 1956 Mercury driven by Wendell Irvin Retallack 23 of Easton. He was charged with operating under the influence reckless driving and expired license after leaving the road at Knife Box Road into a field causing $200 damage and minor injuries. Feb 1 6:35 pm on Route 331 Preston a 1956 Buick driven by Leonard Gilbert Murray 20 of Preston ran off and hit an electric pole causing total loss. mouth lacerations for the operator and a charged for speed. Jan 29 7:20 pm Route 313 south of Greensboro a 1957 Pontiac driven by Mary Elizabeth Roy 39 of Greensboro interacted with a 1955 Ford pickup driven by William Garfield Bilbrough 42 of Denton. no injuries, Pontiac $100 damage, Ford $75. Bilbrough charged with failure to keep right of center. Jan 28 11:57 pm Trice Road near Route 404 a 1953 Ford driven by Edward Roland Adams 17 Federalsburg left the road on icy curves and struck a tree head on. car total loss. passenger Thomas Henry Blockston 17 Federalsburg severely lacerated. operator charged with reducing speed for existing conditions. Feb 4 8:30 pm River Bridge Road near Henderson a 1961 Plymouth driven by Edward Herbert Link 42 Clayton hit an icy spot and slipped into a wooden bridge. no charges.

Denton Veteran Named National Assistant Claims Officer

Denton veteran Roy V. R. Grogan Sr. has been appointed National Assistant Claims Officer for the WWWI after two years as Eastern Shore District Claims Officer. He oversaw seven Maryland assistants and will streamline access to the Veterans Administration. Grogan also leads Eastern Shore Barracks 101 and is Maryland WWWI Department Commander. the Denton office at 910 Market St. operates Monday Wednesday and Friday 9 am to 9 pm.

Caroline County Firemen Host State Leader Meeting

Maryland State Firemen’s Association president Leslie B. Thompson was guest at the Denton firehouse as 66 members met. Topics included a testimonial dinner for Rev. James W. Minter on April 13 at Urbana with Gov. Tawes and wife expected to attend. The next meeting will be March 1 at Preston with Memorial Service and no business.

Caroline Truckers Help Return Lost Paintings

Rudy Agra an art dealer from Washington reports eight paintings recovered after they blew off a car roof during a return from Easton. The eight works valued at about 700 dollars were found by Aubrey Matthews of Denton and Raymond Mace of Greensboro near Queenstown on U S 50. Additional artworks valued over 4000 dollars, including a Picasso drawing, remain missing.

Missionary Julian S. Rea to Speak in County Next Week

The Rev. Julian S. Rea of Kambini Mozambique will lecture at Trinity Methodist Church Goldsboro on Feb 12 at 7 30 p m and St Luke’s Methodist Denton on Feb 14 at 7 30 p m Retired missionary, educator and administrator, Rea has led Kambini’s training school for families and youth, expanded agriculture and Christian stewardship, and helped educate over 1 500 students. St Luke's will host a fellowship after the Denton service. Caroline County residents urged to attend both talks.

Review Of Traffic Deaths On Maryland Highways

Thirteen persons were killed on Maryland highways last week, per a State Police survey. Ten were drivers, two passengers, and one pedestrian. Alcohol contributed to seven deaths, speed to six, and driver error occurred in all fatalities. Col. Carey Jarman urged improvements, noting most deaths resulted from running off the road or driving on the wrong side.

Upper Shore Heart Fund Drive Opens Here

The 1963 Heart Fund Campaign opened February 1 in Caroline as the Heart Association of the Upper Eastern Shore, a chapter of the American Heart Association, leads a month long drive. Volunteers educate about heart and blood vessel diseases and collect donations to combat conditions such as heart attack stroke rheumatic fever high blood pressure and more. Campaign Chairman Frank Zeigler urges every family to adopt the slogan More will live the more you give. Driver Education Program in Our Caroline Schools

Since 1948-49 Caroline County has run driver education in high schools with Betty Orme, Nicola Grady teaching behind the wheel. The program relied on local support, auto dealers for cars, and late state funding to hire a full-time instructor for three schools in 1962-63.
