Heart Month Drive Opens in Caroline County
The Heart Fund Drive of the Heart Association of the Upper Eastern Shore has officially launched in Caroline County led by O. O. Stivers and Dr. E. Paul Knotts. A volunteer door to door collection begins the week before Heart Sunday February 22 as part of a month long fundraising campaign with leaders from surrounding counties attending the Baltimore kickoff.

Florists Day Set at College Park February 18
Florists and nurserymen are invited to Florists Day at the University of Maryland College Park campus on February 18 with registration at 9 a m in the Student Union Building. Denton Artist's Work Accepted for Regional Baltimore Exhibit
Denton artist Gilbert Passwaters, who has studied art for five years, has had his abstract watercolor "Indian Summer" accepted for exhibit in the 1959 Regional Exhibition at the Baltimore Museum. The show opens Monday and runs three weeks, following his prior acceptance at the Delaware Art Center Show last fall.

Community Committee Debates Denton By-Pass Route
The Community Committee met January 28 in the High School Library with 20 citizens led by chairman John W. Asher to study a possible Denton by-pass. The group, formed by civic organizations, will prepare findings within 45 days for the State Roads Commission on route options and recommendations for the town. The next meeting is February 18 at the High School.

Concord Chipmunks Club Meeting At Sarah Lane’s
On January 22 the Concord Chipmunks gathered at Sarah Lane’s home. Karen Hackett demonstrated Open Hearties. Red Cross first aid instructor Mr Wirts spoke about first-aid and a five week course. They earned 33.75 from a Christmas candy sale and planned a February 21 luncheon for mothers at Brethren Church. 4-H Public Speaking Training Course Held
The 4-H Boys and Girls Public Speaking Training meeting was held Friday evening January 30 at the Church of the Brethren in Denton. Leaders and 4-H members attended as the program explained its objectives including leadership, citizenship, information gathering, organization of material, appearance, and public speaking skills. The Caroline County 4-H Public Speaking Contest is set for Friday April 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Denton fire hall.

Fire recorder Charles E. Nichols reports Greensboro Volunteer Fire Company answered 28 calls in 1958, 11 fewer than 1957. Total property loss estimated at 8005 dollars while 85000 dollars worth of property was saved. Equipment covered 189 miles with 360 men in service and 368 man hours. Hose usage included 1275 feet 1 inch, 650 feet 114 inch, 700 feet 215 inch, and 144 feet of ladders raised. Fires listed as 1 mercantile, 8 chimney, 1 grass, 2 dwelling, 1 automobile, 9 miscellaneous, 4 oil burners, 1 woods and 1 assist.

Caroline County Farmers Embrace Drainage and Conservation
In 1958, 63 farmers in Caroline County installed drainage systems covering 17.87 miles and handling 130 207 cubic yards of earth, aiding 1800 acres. Additional efforts included land clearing 60.5 acres, obstruction removal 62 acres, spoil bank leveling 34 984 cubic yards, and 18 ponds with 16 stocked by the Inland Fish and Game Commission. These measures promote farm life and fire protection.
