Firemen Battle Hurlock Blaze In Subfreezing Wind
Early Sunday a dozen fire units from Hurlock and neighboring towns fought a blaze at a recreation center in Hurlock Dorchester county as the temperature held at 12 degrees. The center housed six bowling alleys five pool tables and a barber shop and was destroyed. Firefighters faced ice and wind as flames spread roof to roof with a new fire quickly quenched. No homes were evacuated though a fire on a residence roof was put out. Chief Randle R Williams coordinated efforts with Federalsburg East New Market and Preston units aiding the Hurlock department.

All Shore Phone Lines Break As Cable Is Raised For Repairs
The 90 circuits of the submarine cable to the Eastern Shore failed Monday at 2 30 pm when the line was raised near Kent Island to fix a kink. Emergency radio telephones took over traffic via Elkton and around the bay. Repairs progressed under floodlights on a scow with divers working despite cold seas and frozen air valves. The damaged section lies about 14 200 feet from the Broad Creek cable house. Officials said the kink was likely caused by an anchor drag. Service restoration hoped for later in the week if no further issues arise.
