The JOURNAL invites readers to send two new subscribers with $2 for a free Stock Journal, lauding it as a top paper for stock raisers and farmers. A sewing machine prize will go to the person sending the most new paying permanent subscribers in January from districts four through six, exceeding twenty five.
Joshua B. Jones, living near Bethel Church, shot his wife on Sunday, wounding her in the left temple and lodging a bullet in her cheek. He was arrested by Constable Brown and jailed in Dover to await the outcome.
Mr John E Starkey died suddenly at his Jumptown area home on Tuesday evening. An aged yet energetic farmer and stock raiser, he had long suffered from dropsy. After returning from feeding stock he sat with family and expired quietly in a comfortable pose.
The comptroller paid registers only for days actually sitting, twenty three days at four dollars, refusing payment for office rent and other incidental services. Bills were filed with county commissioners, audited, and paid. They received fifteen dollars for office rent and fifty five dollars for other services.
A Seaford youth, Dave Outten, under liquor, demanded cider at John Allen's store. He fired, hitting Allen in the chin. the bullet lodged in the neck. Outten shot at the squire during a hearing, was disarmed, and committed to county jail awaiting trial.
Thomas Gratz Atkinson alias Thom as Gale alias D C Clarkson faced a Baltimore hearing before Commissioner Rovera for passing counterfeit $2.50 gold pieces in Centreville on November 12. Counsel Mr. George M. Russum and witnesses including Mr. Edward Tanner and Miss Mamie Snyder testified, with several others, leading to Atkinson being committed for the January term of the U S court on the counterfeit charge and already jailed on related crimes.
Mr Robert A Houston died at his daughter's residence in Federalshoro on Monday night aged 78. A genial, intelligent gentleman, he recalled many prominent men and events with fearless candor. He defended a daring rescue of a kidnapped free Black man from Patty Cannon’s gang, entering the house alone to free him.
Christmas day and surrounding days were unusually bright and mild with little cloud cover and no snow. Town closed some businesses. church services and lively street scenes marked the holiday. Sunday schools held programs at School of Christ Church in the courthouse with a decorated Jacob’s ladder, songs, Rev. Hall address, and confections. M E church hosted annual Christmas tree with prayers, songs, and “Rocket’s Christmas.” Many presents and candy boxes were distributed to children. Similar services were held near Denton.
The Irving Literary Society will meet at the Court House this evening. The days are lengthening. No ice has been housed in this vicinity. Miss Nannie Roas of Cambridge visits Mrs. Philip W. Downes. Subscribers changing residence please notify us. Be sure to have your new resolutions ready for enforcement next week. To all the JOURNAL readers a happy and prosperous New Year. George T. Melvin trustee sold the Pritchett Cabinet Shop Greensboro last Tuesday to Thomas B. Pritchett for 366 dollars. Prof. W. M. Tylor of Easton and Miss Annie Tylor from Swarthmore spending the holiday season at home in Denton. Thanks to H. C. Conrad for pamphlet The Press of Delaware a history of newspaper progress in that State. Hon. Geo. W. Covington member of Congress boards at Barnums hotel in Baltimore and goes to Washington daily. No doubt he finds it more desirable in every way. A superstition note on Christman day and a peacable year ahead.
