G H Rue promotes frozen food lockers in Denton urging quick signups to secure 180 lockers. He notes many already rent multiple units and warns demand will outpace supply. Lockers store prepared meats vegetables and fruits at 20 below zero with potential annual savings on meats and reduced spoilage.
Dear Editor, Seabees overseas report on their third anniversary December 28, with 240,000 officers and men in Naval Construction Battalions. Born after Pearl Harbor, they built Pacific air and naval bases, aided amphibious landings from Africa to Normandy, and many battalions are on second tours. Seventy six percent serve abroad. 9000 essential men have not seen foreign service. General MacArthur praised the Seabees for their numbers.
Dr Frank Anderson of Federalsburg was chosen president of the Caroline County Medical Society at a recent Denton meeting. Dr Walter B Johnson of Denton, public health officer, was re elected secretary and treasurer.
Promoted Maj James A Wise former Denton attorney now lieutenant colonel after serving in France as inspector-general of the eleventh part He and his wife Mrs Wise and two children June and Owen receive news of the advance in rank His army service began February 3 1941 with the 104th Quartermaster Regiment later holding key cadre roles at Fort Jackson and Camp Phillips He went to England in June 1948 and earlier missions included the France invasion forces He is a Washington and Lee University and University of Marshal alumnus and son of the late Innes W Wise of Dover Del His prewar work included practice with Fidelity and Deposit Co of Baltimore and Denton Denton resident family background is noted with local ties
The eleventh annual stockholders meeting of the Denton Production Credit Association will be held in Denton at Dentonia Theatre. J C Franklin Baker of Trappe presides. Victor Dean announces two new directors from Queen Anne's and Dorchester counties to replace Russell P Smith. Mas Smith retires. Plan details to follow. Members from Kent Queen Annes Talbot Rochester and Caroline counties will attend.
In Hospital Pvt. Howard F. Joiner son of William R. Joiner of Greensboro is at Fort George G Meade. His brief Christmas furlough was cut short by a slight disability requiring hospitalization. Joiner entered service last July from Delaware after working in Wilmington. He trained at Camp Robinson Arkansas and was home ten days in December before duty at Camp Meade. His wife is LaRue Crain of Denton.
A state leader articulates a 1944 New Year wish urging progress toward peace through victory over Germany and Japan. The message calls on every citizen to contribute to the war effort and asks for divine blessing to protect loved ones as the year begins.
A fire early Wednesday destroyed 7500 chickens plus 50 laying hens and much of a large chicken house on Miss Margaret Butenshoen’s property one mile south of Denton. Estimated damage ran to thousands with no insurance. Firefighters saved part of the building and Miss Butenshoen’s nearby home.
A wartime letter from a private in Italy dated December 16 1944 describes receiving mail from home Denton and friends, a Europe ribbon, hospital recovery, back injury and a wish for Christmas greetings to Denton residents and all who think of the GIs. He mentions a planned photo, missing papers for months, desire for home papers, and hope war ends soon.
Petty Officer John M Nashold writes home from Leyte where his destroyer USS Hamilton helped clear mines and opened fire in the Leyte operation. He describes birthday cake at sea, mail backlogs, typhoons, air attacks, and shipboard movie nights as crews endure long deployments and constant danger.
Lieutenant Thomas Gray Jr a Twelfth Air Force B 25 bombardment pilot based on Corsica received the Fifth Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal for meritorious achievement during an attack on enemy troop and gun concentrations at Rimini Italy The citation praises his professional skill and devotion to duty and notes he has flown 55 combat missions against German held targets in France Italy and Yugoslavia
Federalsburg Mgr and Mrs William W White were notified their son Corporal Charles W White 32 was killed in Italy on November 30 He served two years overseas in the Engineer Corps He is survived by his parents a wife Mildred Simp son White of Baltimore and four brothers and five sisters The Maryland list also reported that Private First Class William R Trice son of Mrs Bertie Trice Federalsburg was wounded in the European area
Major Elizabeth Knouse WARD stationed in Honolulu wife of Major Lloyd B. Knouse who returned to the States with a Florida assignment. Formerly Miss Elizabeth Short of Caroline High School faculty she has been in Hawaii since marriage five years ago. She will join her husband in the States late in February and they will be together at a post in California.
The Caroline County Farm Bureau will meet at Caroline High School in Denton next Tuesday January 2 1945 at 8 00 p m. Elections of directors and delegates to state and national conventions will be held with a report from delegates and refreshments. All members urged to attend. Frank D Zeigler secretary treasurer.
William T Skinner writes from abroad thanking the editor for the letter. He expresses appreciation for the paper and old friends, hopes for a return to normal life, and wishes a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all readers. He sends regards to everyone.
Corporal Alvin R. Moore, 26, son of Ellwood B. Moore of Ridgely, was killed in action in Germany on November 25. Inducted May 1911, he went overseas in September, landing in France. He leaves a wife Virginia Triplett Moore of Louisville and brothers and sisters Frank Usilton Greensboro Noah Merchant Philadelphia Ralph Walls Lewis Usilton Centreville Ellwood Moore Massey and Spencer Moore Ridgely.
