Unjustified Kiosk Gloves in Rural Electrification Debate
The Congress backed a Postal Service bill increasing mail rates, but favored Rural Electric Cooperatives with a special one eighth cent per copy rate for their 28 publications. Critics from the American Newspapers Publishers Association condemn the privilege as unwarranted public subsidy. They warn REA co-ops use government loans and tax advantages to bolster a propaganda effort against private power interests. The piece argues REA co-ops should face the same costs as utilities, noting rural electrification largely solved and farms widely served by central station power.
