Maryland 4-H Members Shine at National Congress

Maryland 4-H club members at the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago earned multiple honors. Martha Rittenhouse of Furman’s Club won food preparation, Charlotte Ann Lister of Ridgely captured the Style Review title, and George C. Frey of Laytonsville received a $100 college scholarship as a runner-up in the 4-H achievement contest.

Secret sugar stamp number to remain hidden for 1947

OPA officials said they will keep secret the number of the new five pound sugar ration stamp valid from January 1 to April 30. Current stamp No 51 and home canning stamps 9 and 10 expire December 31. A second stamp might arrive in early 1947, but Agriculture officials doubt before April 1. Industrial sugar allotments for January March 1947 stay the same as late 1946.

Wycoff Wins Corn Prize In Local Hybrid Show

John Wycoff of Henderson Maryland captured first in the Ridgely Supply Co and Southern States Cooperative hybrid corn show with three cars of U S 13 corn, earning a blue ribbon and a bush el of seed for 1947 planting. Virgil Turner of Ridgely took second with a 448 bushel crop and also placed third with U S 13 corn. Judge Francis Rogers, county agent from Denton, evaluated entries limited to area farmers using hybrid seed corn serviced by Southern States Cooperative and its agencies.

Markey challenges OConor in Maryland Senate contest

John Markey a Republican former Army general filed a formal contest of Gov. Herbert OConor Democrat for U S Senator from Maryland. He lost by 2282 votes and seeks a recount claiming errors irregularities and influence and patronage. He petitioned the Senate for investigation into the conduct of the election.

Holiday Journal Christmas Edition Publishing Schedule

The Christmas edition of the Journal will be published on Monday December 28. Regular advertisers and contributors must submit copy by 10 am Saturday December 21 and no later than Monday December 23. The staff will take several days off during the week with only essential job printing work continuing.

Denton Wins Opener 46-33 in Debut Mar-Des League

The newly formed American Legion Denton Basketball Club opened their schedule last Thursday at the Armory by beating Cecilton 46 to 33. The result marks their first league game victory in the Mar-Des circuit.

Denton Chamber Announces Christmas Decoration Prizes

Denton Chamber of Commerce offers three grand prizes of 25 15 and 10 dollars for best decorated homes. Judges will be three non residents between 7 and 9 pm on Monday December 28. Ted Orme and Jack Logan lead the prize committee. Denton urges all residents to decorate. Christmas carols will air along main street for several evenings before Christmas. Santa Claus will take orders for gifts and a free Christmas movie plus kiddies gifts at Dentonia Theatre on December 23 at 2 pm.

Ex Legislator At 94 Still Owns Land Grant Of King To Ancestor

Robert Francis Ledenham, a Delaware elder statesman and former legislator, celebrated his 94th birthday while tending his farms totaling 500 acres. A Sussex County native born in 1782, he preserved the king’s colonial land grant through generations, never serving in the military. He lives in Bridgeville with son Stanley, while three daughters and four grandchildren remain.
