Fatal Auto Crash Kills Mother and Infant in West Denton

A head on collision on State Route 404 near Denton Saturday night killed a 35 year old mother and her infant, with nine others injured, and left multiple critical. The car carrying eight passengers collided with a three person car opposite the Denton Cemetery.

Breeding arraignment date not set in case notes

In the Clayton Breeding case no arraignment date has been set. The defense seeks a bill of particulars and names and addresses of witnesses. Judge Carter and State's Attorney Wise met with Marvin Smith. the State will file the bill of particulars next Wednesday and a hearing on witness names will follow that day.

Federalsburg Flooded by Torrential Rains and Dam Gap

Flood waters from Marshyhope Creek swamp Federalsburg with 2 feet of water in low areas and 4 to 6 inches downtown. A 30-foot gap in Smithville Dam worsened the surge as Maryland and Delaware rainfall over the weekend triggered state of emergency and Red Cross aid for evacuees.

Church To Operate Concession At Raceway

Kent and Sussex Raceway manager T. B. Holloway announced St. Stephens Church of Harrington will run the main restaurant and concessions during the Harness Meet in Harrington starting Sept 15 for 20 days. The church, led by Rev. Jack Symonds, is building a new 250000 dollar church and has run a successful fundraiser. Nine nightly races with 8 30 post time, 550 stall barn area expected to fill, features include a rebuilt 34 mile training track drainage 48 new stalls and improved parking and lighting. Gene Anderson will call the races Nellie Hobbs will marshal with the 14 year old retired trotter Rapid Hanover.

Democratic Campaign Officers Are Appointed

The Democratic Party in Caroline County names W. Stewart Fitzgerald as campaign chairman with two vice chairs and eleven district chairs. James H. Lynch is general vice chairman, with Mrs. Fitzgerald Wright in charge of women’s activities. District chairs cover Tilghman Williams, Russell Wright, Everett Townsend, James Gallagher, Jack Christopher, M. Emitt Potts, Martin Sutton, plus co-chairs Neal and Ross in the Eighth District. Three Vehicles Total Loss In Local Accidents

Over ten days three vehicles were judged total losses and five people hospitalized. At 4:45 a.m. August 17 Paul W. Schaffer of Washington DC lost control near S. E. Hallowell & Son garage on Route 404 and overturned after striking a pole. Schaffer and Edward Vinnelson were treated for minor head injuries at Memorial Hospital Easton. Schaffer faced reckless driving charges. In a separate incident at Routes 630 and 16, Harry Wise Jr and Joseph Wise of Denton were hospitalized with injuries after a collision with Kenneth Lane of Preston. Lane, his grandson, and Wise were treated for lacerations and bruises. Wise was charged with failing to yield and inadequate brakes. Lane with recklessness.

Caroline County Sets 58 59 Teacher Assignments Countywide

Caroline County lists 58 59 school year teachers with one kindergarten post still open at Greensboro Ridgely. Superintendent W S Hoppengardner warns operation may depend on finding a trained kindergarten or primary teacher. Principals meet Aug 28 to finalize open hours as students return Sept 4.

Farm Queens Compete For Title Saturday Night

Twenty three County Farm Queens seek the Mary land Farm Queen crown at 8 p.m. Saturday August 30 in front of the Timonium State Fair Grounds grandstand. The gala, under the Associated Women of Farm Bureau, includes a dinner with WBAL host Bob Jones as master of ceremonies and judge interviews amid the pageant.

Governor Proclaims Canned Foods Month in Maryland

Maryland Governor Theodore R. Mecheldin signs a proclamation declaring September as Canned Foods Month. The ceremony at the State Capitol included executives from Tri-State Packers' Association and prominent industry buyers and retailers from Maryland Delaware New Jersey and the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The proclamation urges Marylanders to learn about local canning facilities for fruits vegetables seafoods and other quality low-cost products.
