The Caroline County Red Cross announces completion of free water safety courses. Truck Driver Pinned In Cab In Oil City Crash

A tractor-trailer jackknifed and struck a utility pole on Route 313 in Oil City injuring Norman Alfred Willis of Dover who refused treatment. Police say the northbound rig swerved to avoid a southbound car in the wrong lane.

Smith applauded by Hughes on reapportionment push

State Senator Harry R. Hughes praised House Democrats for moving the Tuck Bill toward immediate floor action to curb Supreme Court control over reapportionment. The measure would strip Court review from state reapportionment cases and limit federal court jurisdiction, a plan supported across party lines amid looming deadlines before the 1966 elections.

Play Area Inventory Near End

An intensive survey of existing and potential recreational areas in Caroline County will be concluded this week. State District Park Supervisor David M Hathway says the inventory lists all public quasi public and private facilities and possible acreage for recreation. LaBastille, the planner retained by towns and county, will use the data for the county master plan and potential funding sources.

Boulais Elevated to Full Member of Election Board

John E. Boulais Jr. was elevated from substitute to full member of the Board of Election Supervisors on Wednesday morning. Appointed by Governor Tawes to fill a vacancy caused by E. Landon Walston's death, Boulais took the oath in a brief ceremony conducted by Clerk Ralph Horsey.

Downs accepts Georgia rehabilitation counselor post

Charles F. Downs son of Chauncey H. Downs of near Denton has taken a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor position at the Georgia Rehabilitation Center in Warm Springs. Opened June 2, 1964, the center evaluates and trains the physically and mentally handicapped before job placement with medical services from the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation. The foundation, founded by Franklin D. Roosevelt, is known for polio treatment. Charles and his wife Leona, previously of Richmond Virginia, are settling in Greenville Georgia.

Denton JC Jousting Tournament Heads to Mervin Pentz Farm

The Denton Jaycees announce the second annual Jousting Tournament for Sunday August 30 at the Mervin Pentz farm on Route 404 near Mardela road south of Denton. Sixty riders and a large gallery are expected. two sets of poles will shorten the event by about two hours.

Caroline County Officials Among Lowest Paid In State

John W. Barrett, long time Caroline County educator, became Talbot County supervisor of instruction on Aug 17. Maryland data show Caroline Commissioners earn 750 base plus 600 for roads duties, with no pay for welfare or planning boards, trailing Worcester and far from Prince Georges who top state pay.

Red Cross Seeks Volunteers for United Fund Drive

Lt Col Thomas C Eveland chairman of membership and fundraising for the Caroline County Red Cross Chapter says volunteer solicitors are urgently needed for the United Fund campaign. Without enough solicitors the water safety program may not continue next summer. Offers of assistance can be made by calling Denton 1046.

Goggle Costs Cut For Caroline County Students

Wilbur S. Hoppengardner says the Caroline County Board of Education approved a bid to supply glasses and goggles for public school, lab and vo ag students at 1686 dollars, down from an earlier estimate of 2215 dollars. He notes the law requires the equipment but no funds were allocated in the budget, and he asks the county to finance the purchase via a letter to the County Commissioners.

Bird Checks With Police at Denton Fire House

A homing pigeon tagged Hilltop Club checked into the Denton Fire House around 6:50 p.m. Saturday, rested on a chair, then left at 7:45 after a brief stay. Chief Tilghman Whitby logged the arrival and hopes to locate the owner while the bird heads west toward Western Maryland.
