Tariff debate highlights farmer woes and public affairs talk

Judge Gary remembered as leading steel magnate

States was no mera pladefieldar's ap pointment. The business world came to regard him as an oracle and his occasional pronouncements on the general industrial outlook took prece dence over all other business news of the day, as well as first page position in the general newspapers. The antecedents and career of Judge Gary were typically American. He was born on his father's farm near Wheaton, NL, over 80 years ago. He received a public school and later a law education, which he made pos sible by teaching. There followed long years in the practice of law, which turned gradually in the direc tion of great corporation affairs. His selection to head the United States Steel Corporation may be considered a just reward for his constructive work in ending a great war within competing units of the industry and formation of a company that could cope with well organized foreign com petition. Mr. Gary was far ahead of most of his contemporaries in believing the work of the great corporation he headed should seek the largest pos sible measure of publicity instead of dodging it in time honored style. He was a leader in benefit work on behalf of steel operatives, voluntary com pensation measures and employe stockholding. His industrial liberalism enabled the steel industry to steer clear of many labor troubles which have afflicted other industries. Primarily Judge Gary will be re membered as a great organizer and a great executive. His place among the industrial giants of the age will be permanent. His unfailing optimism regarding the industrial, government al and social future of the United States will remain as a lasting in spiration to courage and enterprise. Wilmington Every Evening.
