Rapid Ripening Method for Unpollinated Dates Found
In 1945 the U S Department of Agriculture science team led by G L Rygg developed a rapid artificial ripening process for unpollinated dates. Immature seedless fruits, previously waste, ripen satisfactorily after two to four days in a humid atmosphere at 120 to 135 degrees Fahrenheit. Hand pollination, tracing to Old Testament days, had been less effective, with about three million pounds of U S dates failing to pollinate.

Pacific Coast Along Route at Quake Belt
The Alaskan center of the submarine earthquake lies on the northern rim of the earth's main seismic belt. This belt, charted over decades, runs along the Pacific coast from Cape Horn, along the American continents, westward past Japan, then to the Chinese coast and the Philippines. It extends to the Netherlands Indies, arcs southeast to New Zealand, nearly touches Australia, with a southern branch from Tokyo to Guam and includes Bayonnaise Rocks, Iwo Jima, and the Marianas.

Cooking Eggs and Dishes Where Eggs Predominate
Cooking eggs requires low to moderate heat to avoid toughness. Poached eggs simmer after dropping in salted boiling water. Omelets fry in heavy pans on low flame. Fried eggs stay tender when cooked slowly and basted. Shell eggs benefit from starting in cold water and warming to simmer. Custards use simmering water and hot-water bath in a moderate oven.
Practical pockets make dresses more usable and durable
Pockets should be placed where hands slip in naturally on skirts and house dresses. Test pocket location before stitching to suit varying arm lengths. Reinforce top corners with tape and add a double row stitching across the pocket top to prevent tearing and extend wear.
Maryland Extension Advises Food Storage for Winter

Garden habits guide for yearly crop rotation and composting
The Garden Guide notes year to year gardeners often try new crops and varieties. It advises recording seed purchases and season notes to plan better next year. It warns against composting diseased tops such as potato vines and rusted delphiniums, and recommends proper disposal and soil enrichment.
Plant disease control in the garden guidance
Severe damage to garden tomatoes by blight and to cucumbers and muskmelons by mildew highlights the major aim of plant disease control. Use dusters or spray guns to protect crops from infection. dust or spray after pests appear to fight insects effectively. Copper or sulfur preparations are noted for disease control.
