Short Course For Firemen To Be Held Again

The fourth annual short course for Maryland volunteer firemen will run September 5 6 and 7 at the University of Maryland under Dean A N Johnson and G F Pollock with Sherwood T Bredkwell as presiding officer. A three day program will cover firefighting salvage first aid gas mask chemical work ventilation of fires oil burner gas station and electrical hazards. Certificates will be awarded by the University and the state firemen's association.

Farmers to cut wheat acreage under national program

Farmers in Caroline county will cut wheat acreage for 1934 and 1935 as part of a national wheat production plan. Reductions will be announced by Secretary Wallace and will not exceed 20 percent of the base period average from 1930 to 1932. The plan bases compensation payments on these reductions to align supplies with demand.

Wilmington Dollar Day Set for August 9

The Mercantile Section of the Chamber of Commerce announces Wilmington Dollar Day will be held on Wednesday August 9 with participating stores displaying the official emblem. Shoppers from the Peninsula and surrounding areas can expect Bargains across a wide range of merchandise as stores stock up for the event. Attendance is a longtime habit for housewives from Maryland Pennsylvania New Jersey and beyond and traffic control is sometimes arranged to manage crowds. The event will proceed rain or shine with no advance Courtesy Days.

Mrs Dora Trice and daughters Sara and Anne with grandchildren and son in law George Culver enjoyed a trip to Berea Kentucky as guests of the former Miss Moore of Harrington who taught at Berea College before marriage Mrs Bessie Disch of Wilmington and her sons visited Lewis Slaughter Sr and family Mr and Mrs Finch entertained their daughters from New Orleans and New Jersey John O Connor of Philadelphia spent a few days with friends here.

County Wheat Plan Committee Formed in Caroline County

A special advisory committee has been appointed by County Agent W H Evans to organize Caroline County wheat growers for the Wheat Production Control Program. Members include Linwoods Q O Jarrell Irvin Brumbaugh H G Greensboro H H Nuttle Luther Short W A Cawley Harry Sullivan Denton Roland Towers Preston Albert White Ridgely Roland Handy and W H Evans. The temporary panel will aid in education and districting the county into communities that will elect directors and local committees. Public meetings are scheduled August 9 to August 17 in Ridgely Preston Federalsburg Greensboro American Corner Denton Hillsboro Henderson with the aim of informing growers about benefits and requirements before participation.

Smithville hostesses entertained friends from Philadelphia and Wilmington as well as local family. Mrs Thelma Kent and daughter stayed with Mr and Mrs Do R Neal and family. Little Dan Horsey returned home from Wilmington. Elizabeth Bullock visited Denton while Altha Lare vacationed in Lewes.

Denton Youth Dies After Early Morning Crash

Wilson Dennis 20 son of Bailiff Frank Dennis of Denton was killed when the car he drove collided with a Victor Lynn truck on the Denton Hillsboro road near Hillsboro. Raymond Beauchamp and James Temple and Miss Helen Roche were unhurt. the driver Preston Rogers held on his recognizance. Funeral services for Dennis were held Thursday at 2 p m with Rev. Turkington officiating. Burial in Denton cemetery. He is survived by his mother, father, and sister Eva Dennis.

Sheriff driver wounds self in leg accident near jail

Jerome Skaggs of Townsend Delaware, chauffeur for Caroline County Sheriff Guerney Tarburton, was severely wounded when a pistol dropped from a shelf and discharged. The bullet tore through his calf and thigh, requiring a transfusion after a hospital transfer to Easton. Skaggs, paroled two years earlier in the Ridgely Bank Robbery case, has since married but his wife lives out of Denton.

Hickman Girl Struck By Auto

Daisy Voss a 15 year old near Hickman is in Milford Emergency Hospital with possible broken back after being hit by a car driven by Jennings Wroten of Harrington. The incident happened at 5 30 Saturday afternoon as she stepped from behind a parked car onto the road. Wroten was jailed on a $1000 bond for assault and battery with an automobile while the girl is treated for injuries including possible broken pelvis.
