USDA Moves To Help Beef Producers In 1953
The U S Department of Agriculture acts to assist beef cattle producers as prices fall a third in a year. Programs include a Plentiful Foods drive with producers and distributors, boneless beef purchases for school lunch programs, and export sales to Greece. Ezra Taft Benson urges orderly marketing to curb price drops. Turkey growers warned against over production as 1953 recommended output falls 12 to 15 percent from last year’s record. Benson emphasizes market discipline and readiness to accept prices amid financing ties to meat firms. Last year the government bought about 6 percent of the crop for surplus removal at roughly $27 million, with turkeys donated to schools.
