The Maryland General Assembly ended an all night session with a 12 year road program costing about 5 568 000 000. It raises the gasoline levy to six cents this July and increases motor vehicle registration fees in 1955. The session also approved a 193 500 000 budget for the year beginning July 1 and authorizes 15 percent income tax cuts, raises for public school teachers up to 300 dollars, and keeps the oyster inspection tax at two cents a bushel. The vets bonus is rejected and oyster grounds leasing measures fail. The Senate also backs 15 million in bonds for state institutions and rejects automatic levy cuts with excess revenues. Fire destroys 75-year-old Sharptown crate factory
A $250,000 blaze Tuesday night leveled the Marvil Package Company plant on the Nanticoke River in Sharptown. Eight fire trucks were destroyed and 18 volunteer companies fought two hours to contain the two-story facility, which produced 75,000 baskets weekly. The fire, likely from a motor bearing in the drying room, forced some residents to evacuate briefly. The plant, bought by Atlas Plywood of Boston in 196, is a total loss with 250–300 workers affected and insurance covering damages. Water from the river was used to supplement city supplies amid boil-water advisories. (Continued on page 6)
