Mr and Mrs Melvin Dawson credit two motorists for promptly raising the alarm when a cornfield fire broke out at a corner. Motorist one called the Fire Department and motorist two alerted a neighbor, helping to control the blaze amid strong winds.
The six county zone committee selecting Comprehensive Association for the Retarded, Inc. approved the name for the proposed comprehensive retardation center serving Benton, Carroll, Jasper, Newton, Pulaski and White counties. Meetings set in Monticello October 10 to begin incorporation procedures. A October 25 visit to Fort Wayne Hospital and Johnny Appleseed Sheltered Workshop in Fort Wayne is planned.

The State Board of Tax Commissioners delays final tax rate certifications until January 15 to allow the Legislature to allocate a large state surplus to direct property tax relief. Surplus may exceed 80 million dollars, with Carroll County potentially receiving near 1 million and 1967 tax rates possibly reduced up to 40 percent, delaying local receipts until March 1.
The Future Farmers of America D C H S chapter sponsors a garden tractor pull at Riley Park on Sunday afternoon October 9. Prizes will be awarded and an entry fee of $2 is required for contestants weighing in at 12:30. Entries are limited to 12 h.p. and a 13 inch draw bar height.
Winamac and Delphi shared the top team honors at a three way cross country meet in Logansport finishing with 37 points each while Cass placed second with 46. Carl March of Winamac won the two mile race in 11 13 and Rex Wilson of Delphi was runner up.

Michael R Johnson of the Associated Press among eight American reporters selected for Columbia University's Advanced International Reporting Program for 1966 67. Johnson, 27, will focus on Soviet affairs while studying at Columbia, with seminars, field trips, and international briefings. In a separate item, Mrs Bessie Swaim was named trustee of Tippecanoe Township after the death of her husband Frank, with local bids and utility easements approved by county commissioners.
Joe Buttice of Route 3 Delphi finished an eight month program at Lincoln Technical Institute Indianapolis. A Camden High School graduate, he is now employed at Block's Tire Center Indianapolis where he was placed by the school's placement service. He specializes in front end alignment and brake work.

Janet I. Mellrath, 36, of Flora rural route 2, applied brakes to miss a calf on State Road 18 one mile east of Flora. The car struck two mail boxes and the calf, breaking its leg, with no injuries to Mellrath. Vehicle damage estimated at 375 dollars. property damage 200 dollars. Deputy Baum investigated with Flora policeman Humphrey.
Arthur O. Weddell superintendent of Delphi Community Schools will address the Pittsburg School Organization meeting at 7 30 Thursday evening October 13 in the Pittsburg School gymnasium. Co presidents of the organization are Mr and Mrs William Dyer.
Parents of children in all Delphi Community School Corporation schools are invited to a 7 30 Monday evening October 10 reception at the High School Cafeteria. Teachers will visit student homes for dinner before the meeting and various parents and organizers plan name tags and refreshments. 1966 Hoosier Girls State Governor Veronica Oesterlein will speak.
