Council adopts the annual salary ordinance effective January 1 1956 with a $200 raise in next January. Salaries include City Clerk 2950 dollars, City Attorney 600, Councilmen 120 per year, and portions funded by water works parking meters and Flood Control Commission.
Royce Kurtz announces 14 first graders have been reported for next year and cards were mailed to their parents. Parents with six-year-olds on or before November 1 1955 who did not receive a card should notify the elementary office to ensure accurate counts for planning.
A discussion on starting a community chest is planned for Tuesday evening in the Library assembly room under the Carroll County Health Council. Speakers Tommy Johns urdue and Cordell of the Indiana Cancer Society will discuss fundraising. The meeting is open to the public.
Mrs Penn Hawkins, a receptionist, is in Dr Crampton's office for treatment at St Elizabeth hospital.
The 1955 senior class presented The Inner Willy directed by Robert H. Jerry with student director Shirley Eis. Cast members including Frances Redman Dempsey Linda Rule and Carol Johnson drew praise for costuming and stage presence as the show drew applause between acts. The piece marked a farewell to a chapter as seniors near graduation and featured standout performances by Nancy Hall Susan Roach Helen Crosby Judy Henderson and more with Willoughby portrayed by John Furst and supporting roles by Raymond Ward Allen Wenzel and others.
Mr. and Mrs. Ross Wagoner observed their 50th wedding anniversary at their Camden home on Sunday with an open house attended by about 250 guests. The couple’s three daughters and three sons helped receive relatives and friends while grandchildren assisted with serving and gifts.
Mrs. Alice Swope of Fowler died at midnight Tuesday night at the family home there. She was mother of Mrs. John C. McDowell of Fowler and formerly of Delphi. The daughter survives with two sisters and a brother and she had visited Delphi often when the McDowells resided there.
The Mitchell Veneer Corporation of Indianapolis has filed suit in Carroll Circuit Court against Leroy Reames seeking 1775 dollars on a promissory note. Joseph Ives is attorney for the plaintiff.
Dr. Harriet O Shea from Purdue will speak at the second annual pre school institute for parents. The event is March 28 from 1 to 3 PM at Flora Methodist Jam. Children will be supervised in the Flora Community Building. Mrs David Baum will discuss first grade problems. Mothers needing Delphi transportation meet at Delphi Library at 1230 PM. PTA provides cars. Sponsored by the Family Living Committee TB and Health Isolation with Mrs Charles Black as chair.
Robert H. Garver 84 a retired Cass county farmer and former Delphi resident died Sunday morning in a Fulton nursing home where he had been a patient. Born July 19 1870 in Deer Creek township he was the son of Samuel and Margaret Cree Garver. His wife Lula preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons Herb of Delphi and Everett of Logansport. Funeral rites were held Wednesday at the Hase Miller chapel Logansport with burial in South Center U B Cemetery near Logansport.
Judge William B. Smith of the Carroll circuit court is designated special judge in Cass circuit court at Logansport to preside over the Philip Greer case. Greer of Logansport faces jury indictments charging robbery inflicting physical injury but the commission of a robbery.
John Hanna was elected president of the Delphi Hi Y for 55 56 term at a recent meeting. Other officers named were Ronald White vice president Robert Hodges treasureroe Laprad secretary Garland chaplain.
Rossville trustee Richard Andrew announces Phil Buck will coach the Hornets next year replacing Allen Niswonger as varsity mentor. Pete Irwin to lead junior varsity. Buck, a Rossville alum, starred at IHSAA semis and Indiana University, later coaching Flora Badgers and earning multiple basketball honors in the Army.
Pupils of Cutler high school will present a spring musical program at the school gym on Friday night March 25 at 7 30 p m. The chorus and small ensembles will perform with no admission charge. James McCaslin serves as music director at Cutler.
Final arrangements set for the annual meeting on Wednesday March 30 at 6 30 p m in the Presbyterian church of Delphi. Dr B L Martz of Indianapolis will be the speaker and reservations for the meal must be made with Mrs Lena Hannell Delphi before March 24.
Mrs. Mary G. Browning of Rock Creek township underwent surgery at St. Elizabeth Hospital last week and is reported improving as she recovers.
Delphi High School launches the 1955 track season with its fifth Hoosier Relays appearance at Indiana University Field House Bloomington. the meet is expected to attract 60 teams and 1 000 athletes with Delphi aiming for gold. Key relay groups include Distance Medley Relay Shuttle Hurdle and Mile Relay led by Bob Moore Wayne Hathaway Leonard Wentzel Ed Clark Jim Blythe and Jim Landis.
Mrs. Sara Adams of Pecos was found not guilty in the Nov 26 1954 shooting death of Paul Ward, a Pecos farmer, in his pickup truck. Attorneys argued the fire was an accident and Adams testified she remained on the stand for five hours. The jury deliberated four days and needed nine hours to reach a verdict.
Earl Pauley of Delphi and Jim M of near Cutler were discharged from the Army this week. Pauley served in Greenland and Jim M served in Alaska. Discharges were received at J. Sheridan.
Jackie Pattengale and Walfer were arraigned in City Court Delphi on charges of larceny. The two were among four youths linked to the case and were to be arraigned before Wood Wednesday after this week. Richard Miller and George Grant remain in Cass County Jail.
Thirty Delphi bowlers join 160 from Lafayette to officially open the American Bowling Congress event in Ft Wayne. Delphi departs at 8 a.m. and bowls at noon, with six teams in Booster division including Delphi Products and Randolph Grocery. The 60 day meet marks Indiana’s first appearance in 19 years.
A council committee led by City Attorney George Obear and including Water Works Supt Clyde Robins and Councilman Walter Clawson will negotiate purchase or lease terms for land owned by Delphi Ice Coal and Supply Co to place a new well in north Delphi. An easement from Delphi Country Club will also be sought. The current North Wilson street well is now used about five days a week to aid Snyder Springs supply. Mayor Wood reported Purdue dusting for mosquito pre-emergence has been done and aerial dusting will begin when weather allows. John Rhine asked to improve an alley between Howard and Harrison streets parallel to Wilson Street after petitions from local property owners.
Invitations for the marriage of Betty Bonner Sams of Statesville North Carolina to James Henry Carmichael formerly of Delphi now in Calcutta India and residing in Delphi. The ceremony is at Broad Street Methodist Church Statesville at 4:30 Sunday April 3. Jim Carmichael is in the armed services at Fort Jackson South Carolina.
Miss Evelyn Farris and John Hettinger wed Sunday March 20 at 4 30 in Rockfield Presbyterian Church with Rev Lloyd Dalquist officiating and Mrs Dalquist at the organ. A wedding supper followed at the bride’s home. The couple will reside in Logansport where they are employed.
Rockfield native Hal Groninger attends the National Council of Presbyterian Men annual meeting in Chicago as a registered delegate. Bob Galbreath and Rev. and Mrs. Lloyd Dalquist join on Saturday and hear Harold Stassen in his first public address since his Eisenhower appointment that morning.
Robert Dinty Johnson of Delphi, a DePauw University junior, has been elected corresponding secretary of Beta Theta Pi. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Myron J Johnson.
Clyde Collins faced Delphi city court for obtaining money under false pretenses after a loan company advertised certificates worth 75 dollars. He paid 75 dollars at a Flora drug store and was fined 10 dollars plus costs 15 35 with 180 days at Indiana State Farm, suspended if he repays 75 dollars and avoids taverns while obeying laws. Sheriff Carey and Flora Police Chief Miller made the arrest.
Today is the final filing date for city office. Mayor Charles A. Wood is the only candidate to file. four council members Dorothea Shaffer Walter Clawson Robert Bradshaw and Edgar Stuntz along with clerk treasurer Arthur Ritchey will file by deadline. John D. Smith will not seek re election. All six named officials are Republicans.
Mrs. Marie Hanrahan of Madison township presides Carroll Unit Indiana division American Cancer Society announces the annual drive to April 1 until the quota of 3031.68 is reached. Delphi's Tui Kappa sorority leads local efforts with Bett McKinley RN as a member. Letters will go to township residents. L H Smith named publicity chair and Art McDowell education chair. Dr Crampton and Dr James McLaughlin advise. other officers and directors listed.
Tony Berto a Delphi coach has been elected president of the Northern States Athletic Conference. Delphi juniors Wayne Pearson and Fred McCain received conference honors as North Judson led with 4 0 in league play and Delphi followed at 2 1. The track meet is set for May 3 in Delphi at 6 30 p m.
John D. Smith of Delphi joins the Indiana State Highway Department right of way division. He has assumed duties and travels across much of the state performing his new role as Siren Mr. Smith.
County Commissioners and Lennox and Matthews review building a new jail with George W Lucy firm low bid of 46 695 60. Labor federation objects to wage scale prompting a Wednesday meeting and possible delay or cancellation of the project. Other bids ranged from 53 606 12 to 64 165 00 as talks continue.
Delphi high school hosts its annual college career day on Thursday March 31 starting at noon with a general assembly and panel discussion chaired by Royce Kurtz e. Student panelists from the class of 1954 include Ann Johnson DePauw Bob Landis Wabash Linda Jane Rule Indiana State Carol Scott Manchester Wayne Knitter Purdue. College and university reps and vocation presenters will speak, including Robert Fletcher DePauw Clum Bucher Indiana University J E Cobb Indiana State Teachers College Myron Phillips Wabash Harland White Purdue and Ralph Maggart Rex Thomas R P Minneman George Schnepp and others from local schools and businesses.
Delphi reports the Boy Scouts of Three Rivers Council have not met the quota with $843.60 raised of a $1250 goal. Local Scout official Maurice Clifford urges timely mailings and asks donors to make checks payable to the Boy Scouts of America and send them to finance division chairman Mr. Ifford.
Delphi Cub Scouts will meet Monday night March 28 in the Delphi Methodist church parlors. The meeting location has been changed from the REMC auditorium to the Methodist church.
