Girls Activities Organized at Park and Library

Recreation leader Miss Esther Hunter directs a Friday morning meeting at the public library and city park for girls and women aged six to twenty. Plans include Senior and Junior Girls Clubs, Hiking Clubs, handicrafts, painting, and home crafts, with afternoon outdoor games in Deer Creek and city parks.

Drought Damage Mixed Across Carroll Crops

County Agent Ralph Maggart reports drought has not seriously damaged Carroll county corn yet, awaiting rain to revive yields. He notes substantial moisture remains and oats and wheat face heavy losses with expectations of less than half a crop, possibly only 15 bushels per acre for wheat.

County Receives FHA Funds For Carroll County Modernization

Indianapolis June 18 Clarence Manion Indiana Director of the National Emergency Council announced that Carroll County will receive $5 945 in FHA funds from private lending institutions. The funds will be used to modernize and repair houses and buildings and for new construction under Title I. No mortgages have been insured under Title II as of March 31.

Plans for Legion Carnival Abandoned

Plans for the Legion carnival set for July have been dropped. Dr. Kirkpatrick, arrangements chairman, announced the cancellation. Mr and Mrs Wilbur Hall and son Wilbur Jr of Sheldon Ti are spending the summer in Delphi occupying the Geo Hall residence. Hall began summer classes at Purdue on Monday.

I U Scholarships Awarded To Delphi Girl Cutler Boy

Florence Bowman daughter of Mrs George Bowman of near Delphi and Wayne Lowery of Cutler were named county scholars to Indiana University. The IU board of trustees announced the awards on Wednesday evening. County scholarships cover one school year and roughly equal the cancellation of the once due fees about 75 dollars.

Townsend Wins Democratic Nomination for Indiana Governor

M Clifford Townsend secured the Democratic nomination for Indiana governor at the Indianapolis convention on the first ballot after rivals withdrew. The packed Coliseum heard speeches from Governor Paul V McNutt and Samuel D Jackson as Townsend pledged a vigorous fall campaign and a government of the people.

Plan Dedication of Deer Creek Bridge in South Delphi

Preliminary plans outline a large dedicatory ceremony for the new Deer Creek bridge and viaduct on state pass 39 and 18 in South Delphi. The event set for Thursday evening June includes the Delphi band and speeches by local citizens to mark the bridge opening and the opening of Deer Creek Park and the swimming pool. Flood lights installed by the softball league will illuminate the dedication.

County Bee Keepers See Demonstrations

Carroll county bee keepers met on Thursday morning at the farm of Mike Arnhart south of Delphi to see demonstrations by members of the State Keepers' Association. A demonstration was to be held this afternoon at the farm of Bill Harter south of Flora.

Fishing Season Opens With Rush On Monticello Lakes

The 1936 fishing season began at midnight Monday bringing a crowd of anglers to Freeman Lake and surrounding streams. Monticello held a street parade with floats by local businesses and groups as cottages near the lake filled weeks in advance.

Frankfort All Stars to Meet Delphi Here Friday

The Culver Machinist All-Stars of Frankfort will face Delphi at the local park in a nine inning softball game Friday evening. Frankfort holds 10 victories in 11 starts last season and has not lost this season. Knitter, Delphi’s pitcher, is highly regarded. White Sox beat Giants 11 to 7 and Cubs beat Cardinals 12 to ?. Delphi All-Stars were edged by Logansport 9 to 3. Knitter allowed only two runs in relief.

Pups of early 90s hold Pittsburg school reunion

Former pupils of the early 90s gathered at the Pittsburg school for a reunion Tuesday. Out of town attendees included Mrs. Bertha White Stair of Lafayette, Mrs. Josephine White Hershey of Los Angeles, and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Wilde of Greenville, Michigan.

Bradshaw Wins Standard Oil Award For South Bend Dealer

R G Bradshaw Motor Service station receives a meritorious award for leading the Standard Oil dealers contest in the South Bend Division over the last four months. The station scored 2180 points with Paul Marvin as salesman, ahead of the runner up by 700 points. The certificate names Bradshaw as Master Merchandiser and honors Standard Service to the public. Balloon Club Formed at Library for Children in Vacation Reading

Miss Mary Cochrane, Delaware librarian, starts a Balloon Club for kids. Each enrolled child has a balloon displayed with their name and books read. After every two books, the balloon rises. eight books brings it to the top. Sixty children already enrolled. more can join at the library.

Esther Nelson of Delphi scored the highest grade among state high school students on a recent test for scholarships at State Normal College Terre Haute. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Nelson of Delphi and will receive a scholarship covering one year's fees.

Wason Named Attorney for State Welfare Department

James P. Wason of Cartwright Wason and Ives will move to Indianapolis to serve as attorney for the State Department of Public Welfare. He will base at South Meridian Street offices shared with the Unemployment Compensation, Employment Service, Gross Income Tax and State License Divisions. Wason brings forty years of practice including twelve as circuit court judge and will remain connected with his firm.

Frankfort Country Club golfers led by Ellers and Daughe posted 74 and 76 as they beat Delphi 28 to 19 on Sunday. Gros and Pearson paced the local squad with 82s, with Pearson shooting 38 for the day’s best round.

Two Women Injured as Car Hits Tree Near Delphi

Mary Benjamin of five miles west of Delphi and Mrs. DeFoe Penrod of Monticello were seriously injured when the brakes failed and the car driven by Miss Benjamin crashed into a tree near the Charles Childers home. Benjamin suffered severe facial cuts and was taken to St Elizabeth hospital. Penrod was returned to her home. The car was heavily damaged.

Orphan Children to Have Picnic at Deer Creek Park

Fifteen orphan children visiting Delphi enjoyed hospitality across several homes this week. Vets Hold On To Bonds In Delphi Area

Only 30 percent of veteran bonus bonds were exchanged for cash in Delphi and surrounding areas. Of 120 local recipients, 51 converted all or part of their bonds as $19,180 in checks flowed to the Delphi post office amid a larger 396 bonds sent to Indianapolis. Postmaster William Ashba confirmed most veterans received their bonds. one Flora route veteran reportedly did not.
