Mrs. Lois Harshman, 49, attempted suicide by taking sulphuric acid at her Washington Street home. Discovered by her mother Monday afternoon, she was taken to St Elizabeth hospital Tuesday and remains critical. The poison was said to have been obtained in her son Billy's laboratory.

Grasshoppers Not Threat to County Crops
County agent Ralph Maggart reports grasshoppers residing in the county are few and pose no crop threat. Nationally, the federal department of agriculture notes insects are a problem with grasshoppers being extremely abundant in Iowa North Dakota and Nebraska. Cutworms show higher than usual abundance but have caused little damage so far.

Sportsman Hotel Damaged by Early Morning Fire
The Sportsman Hotel in Monticello suffered about 2500 in damage from a fire of unknown origin Tuesday night. The Monticello fire department extinguished the blaze after the kitchen and much of the building were destroyed. Insurance covered the loss. proprietor Roy Conrad said the hotel would reopen within two weeks.
