The Deer Creek township owes County $1548 for care of two residents at the County Home. The trustee refuses payment claiming residents qualify for Welfare, while the county argues residents cannot receive welfare. A lawsuit may ensue to compel settlement. The column also notes local anecdotes and upcoming events.
In Carroll county parents are invited to a meeting at the court house office of County Superintendent J. C. Yonker on Wednesday June 20 at 8 p m. The class will be organized then. Interested persons should call 698 or 689 Delpai or contact Mr Yonker at his office.
The Delphi program opens Monday June 11 with 10 a.m. reporting for all beginners at the armory. Students not yet in contact with Mr Casassa should report. The junior band meets Tuesday at 9 a.m. with lessons all morning. The senior band rehearses June 14 at 8 p.m. The first band concert on the square is June 16 at 8 p.m.
David Lyons nine year old son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Lyons of Sleepy Hollow in Jefferson township was shot in both ankles while playing with two friends in a barnyard at the Crouch farm route 2 Monticello. The gun discharged accidentally a .22 calibre rifle injured his right ankle and lodged in the left ankle and he was rushed to St Elizabeth hospital Lafayette.
The Delphi Lions select Mrs. V K Whittlesey of White Co Memorial Hospital Monticello Indiana as the cheer club member of the week. She has been ill since early winter and confined to hospital for five weeks and is allowed visitors. The Whittleseys celebrate their June 14 wedding anniversary.
Mr and Mrs Paul Shaffer of Adams township were notified at Tripler Army Hospital in Hawaii that their son Charles A Shaffer a Marine Pvt suffered a broken arm and shoulder in a weekend liberty automobile crash in Honolulu Two other marines were injured in the same crash reported by Red Cross officials.
Delphi School elementary grades reported a perfect attendance term with 28 pupils of 503 enrolled. Principal Rudolph Minne man noted an average yearly attendance of 95.24 percent and Miss Carney's fourth grade at Hillcrest achieving 96.54 percent.
Thomas Noel III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Noel Jr of Elkhart, was appointed to West Point through Senator William E. Jenner. He is the grandson of Mrs. Rose Colvin of Flora, and his mother Mary Lou Colvin has many Flora friends. He left for the academy around July 1 after diploma ceremonies in Goshen and time at a Washington DC prep school.
Lafayette hosts the annual 40 et 8 wreck with Delphi members Max Hughes and Melvin Denton being initiated into the order.
Agnes Margowski former deputy county clerk and longtime resident is listed in critical condition at St Elizabeth hospital in Lafayette.
Mr and Mrs Jay Taylor and family relocate from the Georgia Quinn property on East Franklin Street to Rossville where he is employed.
Mrs. Mary G. Browning 67 of route 2 Delphi died Monday at St Elizabeth hospital after a four day illness. A registered nurse born February 5 1889 she was educated at San Francisco General Hospital and taught school in Wyoming Idaho and Minnesota. Surviving Laurie Guthrie Anna Torp Winifred Erdman. Funeral Thursday at 10 am from Gentry funeral home with Rev Cecil Atkinson officiating burial in Parks Cemetery.
Mae Schweiger a life long Delphi resident died Tuesday night at Deer Creek nursing home where she had been a patient for four years. Born Oct 25 1879 in Lockport she was the daughter of Albert and Jean Downs. She married Fred Schweiger in 1902. Surviving are a son William E of Greenfield two sisters Mrs Mary Sholty and Mrs Goldie Downs both of Delphi and a brother Ed Downs of Lafayette. Funeral services Friday at 2 pm at Jackson funeral home with Rev Arnold Guy officiating burial in Masonic cemetery.
Mrs. Mattie Kerlin 65 of Flora formerly of Rockfield died Thursday afternoon at Memorial Hospital Logansport after surgery. Born September 30 1890 she married Frank Kerlin December 3 1918. Survived by husband four daughters two sisters and had two daughters Frances and Dorothy Rider predeceased. Funeral rites conducted Sunday at Carter funeral home with Rev Elbert Smith and Rev L M Kitzmiller. Buried Rockfield cemetery.
Funeral rites were held Monday at the Battle Ground Methodist church for Clarence R. Miller 62 of Battle Ground a retired railway mail clerk who died Friday morning at Home hospital. Burial followed at Mt. Hope cemetery Peru with widow Rea Straser surviving. Ei kenberry funeral home oversaw arrangements.
Delphi Lions have named Wayt Talbert as president for next year. Other officers include R P Minneman first vice Nor Ebrite second vice Harold Berry third vice Robert Quinn secretary treasurer Bev Berninger Ed Casassa tail twisters Myron Beesley Lion Tanner Charles Campbell and Albert Burkle directors for two years Harold Talbert and Homer Myers directors for one year. The new officers take over July 1.
Ned P. Rule named editor in chief of Delphi High School 1957 Oracle by advisor Jack H. Sanders. The 1957 graduate and top student will attend the Indiana University Journalism Institute July 8 to 21, with leadership duties and related honors during the institute and yearbook production.
The Delphi Woman's Club invites teachers and locals to a Friday June 22 historical tour. A chartered bus departs Delphi library at 10 a.m. with 9:45 a.m. check-in, visiting Delphi Pittsburg and Oak Grove church lunch at $2.50. Guides Mrs Gearold Clawson Mrs Robert Wood and Mrs George Wagoner. Reservations requested by June 10.
Carroll County reports its first highway fatality of the year when a northbound Indianapolis to Chicago passenger train struck auto driven by 47 year old Esther Gladys Echman at the Sullivan crossing on state highway 18 near Delphi. Eyewitness Mrs. Ralph Sullivan watched as Echman failed to stop, the car veered and was struck broadside, ejecting Echman into a side ditch. The vehicle demolished, landed in a corn field about 150 feet from the scene. Train engineer J R Huston stopped the train 1300 feet north of the crossing. conductor W J Wilson. Seven contestants will compete Saturday night at Flora Theatre for the Miss Carroll County crown. The winner earns an all expense trip to Indianapolis for four days and a chance to compete for Miss Indiana. Judges include local residents from Delphi Flora and surrounding towns.
Fourteen area students are to receive diplomas this month from State colleges and universities. Seven Carroll county graduates join 3,188 at Indiana Universities 127th commencement on June 11. Names include James A. Clem from Cutler and Sharon L. Hanna from Delphi among others.
A daughter was born May 29 to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stankard of Fort Wayne. The Stankards also have three sons. Grandmother is Mrs. Mabel Stankard of Delphi. Additional births include a daughter for Mr. and Mrs Hershel Nale of Flora at Memorial hospital, a daughter for Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Collins of Ockley at St Elizabeth hospital on June 4, a daughter for Mr. and Mrs. Dale Eller of Flora at Home hospital on June 2, a son for Mr. and Mrs. Richard Nipel of Rockfield at St Joseph hospital Logansport, a daughter for Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Couroute 2 Delphi at White County Memorial hospital, and a son for Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Leisure Route 1 Flora at Memorial hospital.
Mrs Betty Oyler 77 of Flora dies at home Friday night a Virginia native and widow of Ammon Oyler who died in 1953. Survived by four daughters and a son including Hazel Fisher and Glenn Oyler. Funeral services were held Monday at Flora German Baptist church with burial at Maple Lawn. Leiter Funeral Home arranged.
Robert Brass, former Delphi schools teacher, earned a master of science degree in education at Purdue University's graduation exercises Sunday. He served as an assistant instructor there while completing the degree. His wife is Betty Schockley of Delphi, and the couple plans a summer stay in New York.
Pauline A. Roach was granted a divorce on Wednesday afternoon in Carroll Circuit Court from Clarence A. Roach. Her former name Pauline A. Catron was restored. Hanna & Hanna represented the plaintiff and Watson C. McCormick, prosecuting attorney, appeared for the defendant.
Mrs W Gale Crowel of Adams township is elected delegate at large from Indiana to the National Christian Church Council in Omaha Nebraska scheduled June 20 to 27. She and her family plan visits to Kansas City and will arrive in Omaha June 18 for a pre conference meeting. She is one of six Indiana delegates attending.
Peter Wagoner a 1956 Camden High School graduate has won both the state and alumni scholarships to Purdue University He plans to enter the engineering school in the fall time frame.
Sunday June 10 will mark Soldiers Home Day with daylong activities at the Home. A parade and related festivities are scheduled to honor veterans and celebrate the site.
Richard Quinn, a Purdue metallurgical engineering graduate, accepts a position with Inland Steel Corp in East Chicago and will begin work June 18. He is the son of Mrs. Troy Quinn.
Wayne Talbert and Robert Morrow were re-elected to three year terms on the local American Legion Board of Directors after a full day election. Delegates to the State convention to be held July 20 to 23 in Ft Wayne were Fred V Mitchell John R Mount Donald L Wilson Robert Morrow and Wayne Talbert. Art McDowell and John T Smith will serve as delegates by virtue of office as commander and adjutant. New officers will be installed July 2 by Jack Harless.
Robert Peterson son of Mr and Mrs George Peterson Adams township will attend Boys State at Bloomington next week as a Burnettsville school delegate. He led the Junior class this year and will be president of the FFA and Hi Y clubs at Burnettsville next year, sponsored by the Monticello American Legion.
Lloyd Ostler of Logansport, 22, arrested by city police on charges of furnishing liquor to minors. Arraigned before JP Lee Stone and fined $10 plus costs.
The city launches its summer recreation program for boys and girls in grades 3-12 next year with registration at 9 a.m. at Riley Park. Over 100 pre-registered. program runs 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, swim on Wednesday, bus to Columbian Park at 1 p.m. for swim parties. Carolyn Johnson leads girls’ activities. Tony Berto oversees boys with Bob Gordon assisting. The Delphi Lions sponsor a girls swim class at Camp Tecumseh July 16–20 for ages 9-14. Delphi also resumes West Central High School baseball, eastern division. league playoffs begin July 23. schedule lists multiple dates and locations.
Principal Harold Dick released the upper six grades honor roll listing 18 students with all A grades for the semester. Names span seniors Sue Sales to 7th graders Dan High and Kathleen Wolf, with B honor recipients across seniors to freshmen and multiple grades.
In regular session, the County Commissioners voted to annex the land housing the Capehart factory into Flora town limits in Monroe Township. They also set a 30 mile per hour speed limit on the Carrollton road north of Delphi from the Tom McCain residence to the Al McCain farm.
Mr and Mrs Elmer Perry of route 3 Delphi buy the 120 acre Monroe township farm of the Verna Brown heirs. Burton O Billiard of Carrollton township purchases 40 acres from the Brown heirs. The Perrys live on the Haughey Mount farm east of Delphi.
