A CWA report analyzes high school students in Carroll County since 1920, detailing 31388 individuals across 31 divisions. It covers gender counts, school attainment, occupations, farming versus city life, marital status, and public office holders, with notes on foreign born and military service. Tom McCormick and Ross Allen supervised the three month survey.
Carroll County schools will formally open on Friday August 31 per county superintendent Geo. McCain. The opening institute runs the prior Tuesday and Wednesday, with teachers holding organization meetings on Thursday. About 3365 students enroll and roughly 100 teachers are employed.
The annual South Delphi resident picnic will be held Wednesday evening July 11 at the home of Miss Lillian Blythe. Organizers include W. B. Smith Mrs C C Julius Mrs C C Kirkpatrick Mrs Charles Wood and Miss Hilda Bowen.
Firefighters were dispatched late Tuesday afternoon to extinguish a blaze in a truck on North Wilson Street. No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation by local fire officials.
The Citizen announces completion of printing the Delphi Telephone Directory for the Carroll Telephone Co. The release provides updated contact listings and local numbers for residents and businesses.
A barn on the Ed Russell farm southwest of Idaville burned to the ground Tuesday evening after a lightning strike. Fire crews battled the blaze but it was gutted with no immediate report of injuries. The cause was attributed to a lightning strike and the property loss is being assessed.
Mr and Mrs James P Wason announce the engagement of their daughter Mary Louise to W Everett Comfort son of Walton Comfort of West Chester Pa The wedding is planned for St Marys Episcopal Church early in September The bride to be is a Delphi High School and Oberlin College graduate who taught in Connellsville and now teaches in West Chester Mr Comfort a West Chester High School graduate attended Drexel Institute and is a draftsman at Lanston Monotype Co Philadelphia
Postmaster General and national Democratic chairman James A Farley visits Indianapolis for a party leaders banquet with more than 1500 attendees. The event kicks off a 28 day coast to coast tour, with Farley planning receptions in fourteen states. He criticizes Republican tactics on constitutional authority.
The Delphi Merchants lost to the Peru Grays 8 to 2 on Sunday. Peru scored in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings while Delphi only plated runs in the fifth. Delphi’s battery was Gee Johnson and Million. Grays’ pitchers were Miller Kendall and Collins.
Rockfield beat Royal Centre 9 to 6 at Royal Centre. Battery for Rockfield was Carrigan and G Nipple.
Donald Chapman who has been at the officer training camp at Camp Bragg North Carolina returns home after a weeks trip by automobile with two companions. They visited Washington and other points of interest en route and split up at Cleveland and Delphi before continuing to Evanston. He plans to start work Monday with the Duncan Electric company in Lafayette.
Several township trustees in the county advertise for bids for school hack drivers for the ensuing year. Bids will be opened Tuesday July 17 at 8 oclock. Several notices of these bids appear in this issue of The Citizen.
A marriage license was issued Tuesday to L Wayne Robertson of Logansport and Gladys Mae Strode of Washington Township. They were married at the court house by Justice of the Peace George Busteed.

Carl Dern age 45 son of Mr and Mrs Silas Dern formerly of Delphi died Tuesday morning at the Pennsylvania Hotel in Wilkes Barre Penn from heart trouble. Born in Delphi in 1889 he lost both legs at age five while crossing Union Street. He traveled the country for years and has lived in Wilkes Barre for 13 years. He leaves his parents a brother and three sisters. Funeral services were held in Wilkes Barre and burial followed there.
Eight pupils of Miss Hanne Kay Beck of Indianapolis performed tap and ballet in a Delphi city park review Monday evening. Dancers included Joan Bradshaw Jane Ulm Patty Sheets Willa Catherine Bowen Dorothy Bowen Mary Elizabeth Shepard R J Maggart Jr plus Lafayette pupils Isy and Billy Laney Mary Petit and Alice Elizabeth Miller.
A mass meeting of the Farmer's Union will be held at the Monticello high school gym this evening at 8 30. Mrs Elizabeth Clark will explain the Frazier Lemcke Moratorium Bill to stop farm foreclosures. The bill is sponsored by the National Farmer's Union with Carroll and White counties participating. All farmers are invited.
A rye straw stack on the Geo. Guard farm two miles north of Wheeling was destroyed by fire last night. Tenant Joe Barnard is associated with the farm. Booster 2:30 P. M. Saturday.
William Garrison a Delphi ballistic expert and hunter bagged a grey eagle near Pittsburg. The eagle measured four feet five inches from tip to tip and Garrison said the species is commonly killed in the area and he will not mount the specimen himself.
The Gordon Players, a long established Delphi troupe, return Monday for a three night run. They have performed in Delphi for 22 years with a tent set on the vacant lot near MelGreevey's pond. May and Kilduff vaudeville team to perform between acts. Tickets admit fifteen cents, twenty five cent regular price.
Eight boys from Carroll county entered a new Civilian Conservation Corps unit. They left Saturday for Camp Knox in Kentucky and will be transferred to Idaho next week after a Kokomo physical examination. Names include Russell Peterson Wayne Ferguson George H Noble Samuel E Kirkpatrick Ernest McCord Jesse Widner Delmar Shaffer and William W Heron.
Marjorie Dukes of Delphi high school and Adriene Mullin of Rockfield were selected from six applicants for 1934 Indiana University scholarships. County Supt George McCain chose them for their scholastic ranking over four years. The applicants included three from Rockfield and one each from Delphi Cutler and Flora. the Cutler applicant withdrew. The scholarships cover all fees for one year.
A large barn on the Larry Rhinehart farm, about 30 miles northwest of Burlington, was struck by lightning and burned to the ground around 10 o clock last night. New wheat and hay press were damaged, and the structure was destroyed.
Charles Swisher 16 of Burlington and Eldon Brown 15 of Rockfield pleaded guilty to separate charges. Swisher admitted cutting and damaging fence on the Leonard Crume farm. Brown confessed theft from Turpie Timmons Store. Both committed to Indiana Boys' School at Plainfield until age 21. They were held in jail and moved to Plainfield by Deputy Sheriff Arthur Anderson.
The Carroll County Board of Tax Review finished its review and equalization of county personal property taxes with few changes. Members listed include Auditor J. I. Whiteman as secretary, Assessor Orvel C. Schock as chairman, Treasurer Robert Johnson, Charles W. Jones and Joseph B. Watson. The board met from the first Monday in June to June 30.
Seven year old Billy Mahanna son of William Mahanna was severely injured Saturday evening while vaulting a picket fence at the Walter Clawson home in South Delphi. He caught his right leg on a picket, requiring 14 stitches. he will be unable to walk for several days as he recovers.
Kenneth Callane of Monroe township is appointed teacher and coach at Deer Creek school for the coming year. A Manchester College graduate, he is currently attending a two week coaching school there.
Dr. Charles L. Wise, son of Mr and Mrs Lewis Wise of Delphi, opened his medical office in Camden on Monday morning. The Wises will move into the James Lesh property after returning from Glen Falls New York.
A quiet Sunday night scene around Union State Bank drew casual interest from passers by. A small crowd speculated Dillinger vacationing at Lake Freeman as the alarm rang at 10 o clock until Assistant Cashier Garfield Shaffer silenced it. a janitor's broom likely set off the time alarm earlier in the afternoon.
Local attorney and historian W C Smith presents a history of Delphi's earliest Methodist church. Read at the Northwest Indiana Conference during the 150th anniversary of Methodism in America. The Citizen will publish in three installments starting with the November 1826 organization near Delphi before Carroll County.
Wheat yields in Carroll County for 1934 vary from five to thirty nine bushels per acre. Top producers include Carl Bock Madison township with 30 acres yielding 39 bushels. Others report 32, 28, 27, 25 and 22 bushels per acre amid drought and chinch bug pressure. Overall county average about 15 bushels, crops normal and quality good, though oats suffer from dryness and some corn fields show wind and hail damage.
Dave Hoover a Delphi jeweler and Mrs Hoover plan to move to Chicago this week where he will open a shop in the same building he used for years before coming to Delphi He has been in business five years in Delphi He asks customers to retrieve watches in repair by Saturday June 14 A farewell party for Mr and Mrs Hoover was held at Hickory Grove church Tuesday evening
The Chevrolet owned by A. D. Bishop Flora attorney was badly damaged Tuesday evening when it plunged into a roadside ditch near the Harry Milroy home. Driver Charles Jordan of Flora said he fell asleep at the wheel and lost control.
The Indiana highway commission let contracts for paving 1 961 miles on state roads 18 and 39 from Pittsburg to north of road 18 to Lane's Corner to Roger Daoust of Defiance Ohio for 65745 dollars. The Freeman Lake bridge on road 39 near Monticello was awarded to W C Babcock Grain Company of Rensselaer for 91886 47 dollars. A extension to Delphi and two bridges over the Tippecanoe and Wabash rivers are planned before the Monticello road is finished.
Plans have been made to hold the annual Carroll County Old Settlers Day on August 11. Robert G. Bradshaw is president of the organization.
Mrs. Robert Heiland discovered her husband Robert suspended by a rope in the barn north of Burlington. She and their three children attempted to revive him after lowering the body, then summoned a physician from Darwin. The Heilands resided on the G. M. Redding farm. he left three children and two parents. Funeral held Tuesday at Camden.
Carroll county mail carriers and families held their annual picnic yesterday at Delphi city park. A cooperative supper was served with Mrs. Joseph Lathrope in charge of arrangements.
Farmers Union holds a meeting Tuesday evening July 17 at 8 o clock in the Pittsburg school building. A guest speaker from Frankfort will attend. The public is invited.
