Sheriff James Coghill reports he alone picked up 28 underage drinkers on three beaches over the weekend. they were sent home after their bottles were returned empty. The town adds a contributor this week with a poem book from Mary Tutewiler Irwin.
Thieves broke into the Flora Post Office and Sisson's Jewelry in Flora Monday night or Tuesday morning. At the Post Office the combination was knocked off the safe but nothing was taken. Sisson's loot included silverware razors lighters key chains rings and watches valued around 2000 dollars. Investigators State Detective Dale McCurdy Trooper Dennis Davis Sheriff James Coghill and Flora City Policeman Merle Johnson are on the case. A separate break-in at Lahr Motors in Delphi Sunday night reported no losses.
Mrs. James Viney directs the Make It Yourself With Wool contest sponsored by the American Wool Producers. Awards go to winners across junior senior and adult classes for garments made from 100 percent All-American Wool. Judging is Friday July 29 at 9 30 a.m. with a style show at 2 p.m. at the Farm Credit Building on Teal Road.
The Rev. Arthur Howell 76 a retired Methodist minister died at his home in Lebanon. Surviving sons include the Rev. Foregh Howell a former minister in Delphi. Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Centenary Methodist Church Lebanon. Burial followed in Clear View Cemetery Brazil.
Ellen Snyder travels to Colorado to visit sisters and family for three weeks. She traveled with Mr and Mrs Frank Rodkey.
Flora residents Mr. and Mrs. Hendrik VanDoorn relocate to Hamilton Street once occupied by the Gerry Underhill family. Jay Sumpter and son John return to Delphi from Indianapolis. Robert Bruce and sons move to Paul McMurray property in South Delphi. Mrs. Peter Jensen of Media Pennsylvania and Miss Peg Flounders of Wallingford Pennsylvania stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Fowler and family, former Swarthmore classmates.
The Carroll County Cancer Association awarded scholarships to Delphi residents Terry Beach Ruth Ann Shonk Debby Sales Diana Jester Shirley Vianco Cheryl Peter Linda Rohra baugh Joquita Campbell Kay Guckien and Carolyn LePage All scholarships cover one year with possible re application Funds come from United Fund donations and memorials The group distributed 500 grants to Lobund Laboratory Purdue University and Indiana University Medical Center for research The association notes 28 board members plus officers and invites residents needing help to contact Mrs William H Myer Memorial gifts go to Mrs George Wagoner Checks to The Carroll County Cancer Association
Two weekend crashes near Pittsburg and Oakdale bridge result in no injuries. Joseph Mugg of Lafayette given ticket for loss of control after a three car chain reaction involving John Norris of Kokomo and Larry Hughes of Indianapolis. Sheriff Coghill and State Trooper Herb Clear investigated. A separate Sunday accident near Oakdale bridge on a Brownsburg driver’s car caused $2000 damage to a 1966 Mercury with no injuries. Monte Kerry Hayes departs for Peace Corps service in the Dominican Republic after training in Puerto Rico and Indiana Univ.
The CYO of the Lafayette Diocese announces a golf tournament on Thursday July 14 at Carroll County Country Club. Two golfers from each parish compete for eight trophies. Registration 9 to 9 30 and the day’s fee is 2.50. Reservations due by July 11. Mrs Earl Albregts chairs.
Mr and Mrs Dick Klepinger of Indianapolis and Mr and Mrs Robert Korb of Dayton Ohio spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs Paul Johnson and Mr and Mrs John Klepinger.
Miss Vita Pisciotta of New City spent a few days last week with Mr and Mrs Gordon Wheatley. She is Mrs Wheatley’s sister.
The City Council votes 3 to 2 to reject the Diversified Utilities proposal for a sewage disposal plant. Fire Chief Ruskuski may send two firefighters to the Firemen’s Convention. Richard Cornell of the Old Settlers Committee asks to use city streets for Old Settlers purposes and is granted.
In the coming school year Delphi Community High will implement a team teaching approach in two World History classes. Enrollment was voluntary and formats include joint sessions, paired instruction, and mixed group activities leveraging strengths of Mrs. Whitehead and Mr. McGrew.
In a Friday incident in Delphi a 79 year old woman Mrs Leona Smith of route 1 in the north end was hit while seated in a rocking chair as a car driven by a 10 year old neighbor backed across her lawn. She suffered a broken leg and other bruises and was taken to Home Hospital by the Cornell ambulance. Deputy Sheriff Jerry Britton investigated the accident.

Mr and Mrs John Klepinger and Mr and Mrs Robert Sieber have returned from a vacation to Nova Scotia reporting a pleasant trip and timely restful days in the seaside province.
Mr and Mrs Don Connelly and daughters moved from Bunker Hill to the Don Burkhalter property on Monroe Street. He is a salesman for Farm Bureau Insurance. Miss Trina Lou Penn of Indianapolis was a weekend guest of her grandmother Mrs Florence Penn. Mrs Burdetta Wheatley of LaPorte spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Gordon Wheatley.
Suzee Walker, daughter of Mr and Mrs John E Walker, enrolled as a freshman at Beloit College in Wisconsin marking her first year at college.
Woodrow Copenhaver, 30, was wounded in the arm by a .22 rifle fired by his wife Violet, 40, at 3:30 p.m. Monday in their home northwest of Delphi on Route 1 after a family argument. She said she believed the gun was empty and used it as a threat.
