The budget message sparks cautious optimism among conservative business groups and Wall Street editors. Ramoné Moley likens the mood to a war, arguing future public works and relief will restore wealth, while omitting the broader benefits of government modernization.
Governor Paul V. McNutt will address the Jackson Club Banquet at Delphi armory Monday evening February 5. The event, planned by Democratic leaders, is a major county political affair with state officials expected and tickets priced at 60 cents.
The Civil Works pie will be divided into smaller pieces with rural and small town workers under 2500 population doubling their quota. They will work 15 hours weekly and receive half pay. Administrator Harry Hopkins expects 500,000 more jobs. The move aims to pacify critics and reduce wage-scale disruption while pushing more applicants to the front of the line.
Forty five students have enrolled for CWA night classes announced by Supt. George McCain. Plans are complete and classes start within a week with focus on commercial subjects English social studies and mathematics. A nursery school is also planned under the CWA program.
The Taxis club of the Presbyterian church will hold a penny supper at the church at 7 30 this evening Thursday. Members are asked to bring white elephants and baby pictures. Everyone is invited.
The County Red Cross reports hitting the national quota with townships listing chairmen and per locality contributions led by Delphi by Hilda Bowen at 383.23 and Flora by Mrs. Chittick at 63.57. Our local chapter thanks all donors and workers, with Mrs. Chas. Schnepp as Go. Chairman.
Civil Works Administrator Harry Hopkins told state officials that rural and small town workers may see hours drop from 30 to 15, doubling the number of workers to about 500,000. Local officials had not yet been notified on adoption. If applied, Carroll County could see over 1,000 workers, while total wages remain unchanged.
Corn Hog producers needing sales records for filling corn hog contracts can secure carbon copies of all sales made through the Producers Commission Association. Farmers should call at the office of Ralph Maggart, county agricultural agent, who announced the arrangement yesterday to ease access to records and assist with contract forms.
Charles Flagler can be heard on WHO and WOC each Monday Wednesday and Friday at 5 15 p m and on KSO three times weekly. He sings popular ballads with his wife Ruth Maley formerly Delphi resident. Julia Ann Smith eight months old daughter of Mr and Mrs William B Smith was returned home from hospital after a critical illness showing improvement.
William Clauser, son of Dr and Mrs A C Clauser, is named to a one year interne post at Cleveland city hospital starting July 1. He will graduate from Indiana School of Medicine in June with high scholastic honors after earning a B S from DePauw University and Phi Beta Kappa election.
Eight teams compete in a three annual invitational at Burlington gym Friday and Saturday. Participants include Carrollton Deer Creek Burlington Rossville Young America Russiaville West Middleton and Erwin township. A consolation game precedes the finals Saturday night with semifinals and final rounds scheduled. Officials Campbell Twelve Mile and Jackson Anderson.
Indiana officials push expansion of Civil Works to include flood control on the Wabash and other rivers. Wayne Coy and Rep Virginia Jenckes advocate an $18 million appropriation and RFC bond authorities. If approved through the Army Department, Carroll County could gain more work.
Flora defeats the Delphi Oracles 28 to 22 at Flora Community Building after a late rally. Jack Grimm sparked the comeback with two center shots in the final five minutes and finished with five points, while Jack Gee led the Oracles with three made from the side. Flora led 13 11 at halftime and held off a tight finish as Grimms late scores sealed the win.
Dudley Richardson pleads not guilty to the murder of Lafayette policeman J Wesley Wilson. His trial opens Monday in the county circuit court with Sheriff Clifton returning Richardson from Michigan City where he was in solitary confinement. Armed guards will protect the Delphi courtroom.
County Clerk Wilbur Lane says voter registration will start in a few days unless the Supreme Court acts. Supplies are expected to be shipped this week and notice will go to deputy and precinct officers to collect materials and guidance after receipt and the court ruling.
Judge E. E. Pruitt issued a restraining order Wednesday against County Treasurer Robert Johnson and County Auditor J. L. Whiteman prohibiting them from advertising property for sale for delinquent taxes. The injunction was brought by Edwin Ruffing and Joseph F. Ruffing with attorney Gus A. Hall.
Delphi attorney Floyd Julien was appointed attorney for Rockfield Bank and for Indiana financial institutions. George Kistler of Logansport became special representative of the department in charge, with Union State Bank of Delphi named as depository for funds.
Dwight Beard, son of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Beard of Clay township, suffered a cracked vertebrae during a Rossville High School basketball game. The senior will wear a cast for several weeks. Also noted is Mrs James W Riley, previously critically ill, showing slow improvement at Home Hospital Lafayette with expected recovery.
Chicago police announced that three 17 year old youths admitted the theft of an automobile belonging to Russell Barnett of Delphi. Barnett was at Billings Hospital last Monday. Barnett is a retired Chicago police sergeant.
Florence Scott, county attendance officer, announces the December attendance record. The county average is 96.5 percent based on enrollment, with Bringhurst leading other schools at 99.7 percent. Subscribe for The Citizen.
The county high school principals planned the fifth annual spelling contest for Saturday, March 31, with no fixed venue yet. Noted champion Robert Payne of Burlington previously won the county title and triumphed in a district bee at Logansport. The event will have seven divisions from 3rd to 8th grade, with Norman K. Knaub as chair and a committee including Russell Callane, Florence McCune, Dorothy Clark, and Ruth Stanton.
The county board of commissioners will hear all applicants or their representatives for old age pensions in the courthouse at set dates. Over 200 applications have been received and funds are tight, necessitating careful selection. Township totals include Deer Creek 71, Monroe 46, Rock Creek 22, Madison 14, Burlington 10, Democrat 10, Clay 12, Washington 9, Adams 11, Jefferson 7, Jackson 8, Tippecanoe 3, Carrollton 5.
