Mrs. Anna Murphy of Rockfield who died recently was a great aunt of movie star Janet Gaynor. She was a sister of M. W. Gaynor, Janet Gaynor’s grandfather. In other news, Mr and Mrs L M Pletcher and daughter visited Mr and Mrs Grover Short and family at Knox on Sunday.
Samuel Hefleng eighty one died Friday at his son Bernies home in West Delphi after a long illness. He leaves three sons Bernie Leo of Frankfort William of Delphi and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Josephs Catholic church with Rev. Clifford Reed officiating and burial in St. Josephs Cemetery. He was born in Muncie Indiana in 1852 and moved to Carroll County as a boy. He married Mary Jane Dowe in 1878 who died 27 years ago. He lived with Bernie in Delphi after her death. He is survived by Bernie and Leo, a daughter Ida Mary died in 1902.
Funeral services were held for Charles J. Smith 51 a prominent Delphi stock buyer and owner of the Delphi Stockyards after a Monday morning car collision with a Wabash freight train at the Ninth street crossing in Lafayette Wingard 33 survived with minor injuries Smith died en route to hospital and his body was taken to Blythe funeral home in Delphi He had helped run stock yards in Delphi Monon and Rensselaer and moved near $1 000 000 in business last year He leaves a widow daughter Ruth a son John his mother and several siblings.
Bobby Blake of Lafayette wins his third consecutive Golden Gloves championship in bantamweight after two close decisions against Earl Douglass of Crawfordsville and Yokochi of Purdue. He leaves for the Chicago tournament Sunday.
Sherman Minton of New Albany announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate. He pledged loyalty to the party and support for New Deal utility regulation, citing relief for Indiana public utility patrons. Minton, a World War II veteran with the 33rd Division, joined other Democrats R Earl Peters Harvey Cole William Nelson White and George W Rauch in declaring their bids.
Senator Claude Wickard, AAA hog and corn chief, will address the fourth annual Social and Educational conference February 27 28 at the Claypool Hotel Indianapolis. The program includes W H Settle M C Townsend Ben Kilgore and E A ONeal with sessions scheduled morning afternoon and an evening event. Last year over 1009 women attended. over 700 township farm bureaus exist and plans for the year will be set at the meeting.
Work progressed this week on a city drive to remove local radio static through cooperation of the Indiana Service Corporation and the Telephone Company. South Delphi has been cleared of interfering limbs and branches and work began in the business district. It will take several days to complete and should reduce radio annoyance. Radio fans are urged to cooperate as thorough cleaning is needed and owners' permission is required before trimming trees in front of homes.
Delphi attorney John L. Hanna, who was said to be ill Friday, is much improved and expected to be out in a few days. Officials state he did not suffer a stroke but was treated for esoteric poisoning. Booster 2:30 P.M. Saturday.
The annual report of J. L. Whiteman shows total receipts of 99 462 02 dollars and total expenditures of 91 584 08 dollars for Car roll county gravel road fund. Disbursements include gasoline tax 86 328 41 dollars delinquent gravel road repair 2 845 40 dollars road tax paid in 2 410 27 dollars leaving a total road fund balance of 7 877 94 dollars.
Mr and Mrs George Smock of South Delphi win the Old Stove Contest conducted by Indiana Service Corporation. The winning stove, made by William G Willards Company of St Louis, has been in use 36 years. The Smocks receive a new Tappan Gas Range courtesy of the Service Corporation in partnership with the Pletchers and Mount Hardware companies.
Carleton EB. McCulloch, Indiana Democratic State Chairman, delivered the keynote at the Annual State Democratic Editorial Association. He said Indiana and the nation are getting a new deal from a new dealer, using a deck of cards with the joker and blanks removed.
Mrs. A C Clauser addressed the Hoosier Salon Patron's Association at L S Ayres Auditorium Indiana polis. Her lecture titled Turning Ours Backs to the West Wind highlighted Indiana's cultural talent with added remarks by Ross Lockridge and Ruly Rotbert Montgomery of Iowa. The group aims to foster appreciation of Indiana music and literature with reviews and musical numbers at meetings.
The Delphi Armory hosted a Friday night inspection of Co G 151st Infantry with Lt. Col. L Madison in charge. Command staff including Col Albert Whitcomb Brig Gen D Wray De Prez and Maj Norman Thompson attended as officers observed administration, supply, and armory conditions before a drill inspection. Uniforms for Indiana Guard troops were measured Monday night, featuring dark serge coats and light elastic breeches.
More than 450 people attended the Lincoln Day banquet at the local Presbyterian church. Prof J Ramond Schutz of North Manchester College urged liberalizing the Republican party and fighting bureaucracy while warning against overriding the Constitution. The event featured introductions for candidates Roy Street of Lafayette and Claude Steele of Knox, with Mrs Julia Irelan elected president of the Women’s Republican club and new officers named. Music complemented the program with the McCain sisters duo and soloist Mabel Fraser.

Mrs. Monroe Kirkpatrick resigns from her post as custodian of the county courthouse effective March 1. The commissioners accept the resignation and name Glenn Chadd of Delphi as successor.
Mrs Margaret Afflis visited Indianapolis Saturday and attended a luncheon at the Claypool hotel hosted by state vice chairman Mrs A P Flynn. From three to five in the afternoon she was a guest at a tea given by Mrs Paul V McNutt.
