W B Ward extension horticulturist advises Hoosier gardeners on starting plants in hotbeds. Cover beds during extreme cold, ventilate to avoid heat buildup, and ensure shelter. Hotbeds use fermenting manures, steam, hot water or electricity for extra heat and should be well constructed and sunlit. Begin seedlings about 30 days before transplanting.
