Announcement reveals the December 24 1923 marriage of Floyd L. Tracht and Fay L. Draper in Delphi. Miss Draper teaches sixth grade and did not sign a teaching contract. Tracht works for Acma X-Ray Co. in Springfield Ohio. The couple kept the ceremony hidden until now and receive local best wishes.
William M. Large of Oakland City Indiana and Ruth E Hinkle wed Thursday afternoon April 17 in Frankfort at the Presbyterian Manse performed by Rev Crane. Mrs Large daughter of Ada Hinkle and a Delphi high school graduate of 1914 she works at the Electric Light company and is active socially. Mr Large son of H M Large of Fort Wayne Purdue University graduate 1917 in Electrical Engineering he served as a Coast Artillery lieutenant in World War I and is district superintendent for Indiana Power Co based in Oakland City. They plan a short wedding trip before returning to Oakland City to establish their home.
Mrs. Philip E Schnepp aged 63 9 dies at home on Front Street after a brief illness from a lung hemorrhage. She was born July 4 1860 in Shelby County Ohio and moved to Carroll County in 1864. She leaves a husband two children Lora who died in infancy Arthur in Delphi a sister Mrs Joseph Mason a brother Wm E Brown two stepchildren Orpha L Schnepp and Charles B E Schnepp. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Colburn Rev Allen officiating. Burial in Colburn Lutheran Cemetery.
On Tuesday April 22 a high school tryout will select a Delphi student to represent Delphi High School at the R M D oratorical contest in Rensselaer on Saturday April 26.
Harry Bohannon Post 75 American Legion endorses uniform flag pole installations at business fronts. Each 12 foot staff with flag costs 5.85 to install in an 8 inch sidewalk bore, using iron housing. quick deployment after a signal, with annual use about 80 days and potential Christmas display. Experts from Shenandoah Flags and Decorating handle work as Legion solicits merchants next week.
Thieves robbed three Delphi businesses Monday night using local knowledge. Margowski Drug Store saw small cash losses around five dollars plus perfumes compacts and pens. Whiteman Bros. mill lost twenty five to thirty dollars from an unlocked safe. Smith Restaurant near the Interurban station reported about fifteen dollars in tobacco and cigarettes taken.
The city designates a special clean-up week from April 28 to May 3. City officials and civic clubs will cooperate to clean yards streets and alleys. The effort aims to beautify the city and reduce disease by removing rubbish piles that attract flies.
A correspondent suggests placing a caution on every road entering the city. The sign would read Go slow and see our city its worth looking at. It contrasts with a harsher message Go fast and see our jail its not so good.
The Delphi fire department received four calls in one week, an unusual spike for the city. Two barns were destroyed with unclear causes, including the second barn on Indiana Street near Patrick Sales's home. Earlier calls included Mrs. N J Howe and William Westfall residences with roof damage but limited property loss.
A garage at J. C. O'Connor's home burned on Friday at midnight. The blaze endangered adjacent properties as a large pile of shingles and kindling stored inside the building ignited, and several nearby structures suffered paint damage while the fire department saved others. The telephone line was also damaged, temporarily cutting service to the north city area.
A marriage license was granted Wednesday to Ernest I. Parrer of Logansport son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Edwin Farrer and Esteline Stephen daughter of Mr and Mrs Riley Stephen of Washington Township.
The Car roll County commissioners metThursday selecting voting sites for each precinct. Contracts for bridge and approaches to the Y M G A camp were let to Minnix and Clark of Flora. The Willi R Barnard road on the Jackson and Carrollton line was ordered established.
Democratic governor candidate Joseph Cravens of Madison plans a Flora speaking event as Democrats from Delphi attend. A county banquet planning committee chaired by Mr. Baird meets tonight in Flora on May 2, preceding Cravens speech. The Indiana Anti Saloon League urges lawmakers to pass a codifying liquor bill restoring dry laws, and asks candidates to state their stance.
The Ralston for President committee met at the Claypool last Thursday to plan boosting Senator Ralston nationally. Soames Walter S. Chambers serves as president and Dan W. Simms of Lafayette is secretary.
Indianapolis mayor and GOP governor candidate Lew Shanks is billed to entertain a Delphi crowd at 2 30 PM Saturday. The event is billed as a lighthearted rally with Shanks touted as a strong factor in the nomination race. Edward C Toner and campaigner RE Eikenberry toured Carroll County and held a court house meeting in Flora attended by about fifty people. Toner spoke at the event and Oswald Ryan was listed as delivering the pep speech but did not appear.
The Y M C A held a Friday meeting with C V Treavebaugh Joseph Shirk Dr Oyler and others to review central camp plans. An architect presented specifications for a July 1 camp opening site at Tippecanoe with about fifteen lumbermen in attendance. Jame A Shirk will be local superintendent of construction and the central lodge dining room will seat 250 for the July event.
At the White County Democratic banquet, Henry Barnhart praised W. C. Smith as a potential judge, recalling past campaign teamwork. Barnhart also commented on John Rothrock as a prosecuting attorney candidate and drew a connection to his grandfather’s fighting qualities.
Washington township officials decide no improvements will be made to Deer Creek high school this year. The state board demands upgrades, risking loss of commission. two petitions circulate for and against the addition while the advisory board delays action for a year.
Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Burkholder and daughter Jean Ann visited Delphi last Sunday. Mr. Burkholder inspected the courthouse shrubbery, set stakes for two tulip trees for Arbor Day, and noted removals and replacements of dead or damaged trees on the west side. The assessment calls for removal of a poplar and soft maple and elm near the monument due to decay and scale damage, with younger trees to be planted and more cultivation and manure for the shrubbery.
Federal and Kokomo tires are tied to an inquiry at the Service Tire Shop run by proprietor John Mahoy. Officials review stock and practices as part of a local trade inspection.
Mrs. Mary Theresa Brown Cowan died April 16 after long illness. The Danville resident leaves an invalid husband and two sons Oliver in South America and Robert of Danville, plus three sisters and three brothers. The funeral is set for Saturday at 2 PM at St Marys Church with burial in St Josephs cemetery.
Editor notes Mindwell did not send her column from Washington D C April 1924 and instead publishes a letter dated April 13 1924 from Shoreham Hotel detailing her welcome at the White House meetings with Mrs Coolidge the Pi Beta Phi reception with Secretary Wallace and other figures plus a critique of farming policy and plans to include her usual column later.
