New York AP report states State Supreme Court Justice Stephen Crane altered jury directions for a second time to aid the defense in the Bernhard Goetz case. The judge allowed jurors to inspect screwdrivers from two of the men shot and the jacket of one victim, as defense attorneys pressed objections to a prosecutor demonstration about the jacket. The deliberating jury also received guidance that an inference favoring innocence should prevail when two plausible inferences exist.
In Kansas City Missouri a roller coaster train slammed into a stopped train on the Orient Express at Worlds of Fun. Nine people were injured after an accident in 96 degree heat that trapped riders up to 40 feet above ground. Officials shut the ride indefinitely as two trains of seven cars carrying 28 passengers each collided at the station.
