Senators span gulf by air to assess Hormuz threat

U S senators John Glenn and John Warner viewed the strategic Strait of Hormuz from an Oman air force helicopter after flying over the Musandam Peninsula. The trip follows the Soviet attack on the USS Stark and aims to boost military cooperation with Gulf states to safeguard oil routes and free navigation. The delegation tied the mission to regional tensions with Iran and Iraq and included stops in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and possible visits to Iraq. The Gulf Cooperation Council nations, allied with the United States, seek to defend the gulf from intervention and limit spillover of hostilities.
