Big Spring will start excavation on the new federal post office after Templeton-Cannon of San Angelos submitted the low bid of 94350 for the one story brick and stone building. Harlingen June 30 The Lower Rio Grande Valley now has 21 canneries up from three in 1930 with more planned. A H Ways of the industry notes several plants will be built soon. Local products include chili tomatoes beans sauerkraut spinach beets mustard greens grapefruit juice grapefruit hearts peas black eyed peas pineapple juice pumpkin okra tomato juice and nut meats. Grapefruit juice and hearts are set to become a major packing line. A commercial grapefruit vinegar is in production and a grapefruit winery is announced. One company ships grapefruit juice by the barrel to England.
Haile Selassie spoke to the League of Nations assembly in Geneva amid hostile demonstrations by spectators. His remarks defending small nations were drowned by uproar as police arrested several alleged Fascists in the gallery.
The fire chief warns drivers not to race ahead of responding units. He notes that fire apparatus cost taxpayers 10 000 to 18 000 dollars and urges motorists to pull to the curb and wait until the trucks pass. Fire trucks save property and lives and must have right of way.
Del Rio offers no formal Fourth plans while Brackettville hosts the fourth annual Las Moras Golf Club tournament July 3 4 5 with 14 prizes. Eagle Pass schedules its Winter Garden swimming meet July 4 with events in multiple divisions and awards by Mayor H. T. Harper. Rocksprings stages its seventh annual rodeo and race meet July 3 4 with daily dances and music by Jimmie Klein. Ozona links a three day race meet July 2 3 4 to Crockett County’s rodeo stock show and sale with purses up to 100 dollars in various races.
Douglas Brashier 17, son of Mr and Mrs D W Brashier, was bitten Monday afternoon in the back yard at 708 Spring Street while searching for a skunk. The bite on his left leg was painful but the wound lies away from major arteries, and he was reported to be recovering well on Tuesday.
Gainesville reports two men from Clarksville, W C Morgan age 27 and Felix Lee, died when their truck side swiped another and struck a culvert six miles west of Gainesville. John Bezner, driver of the second truck, was uninjured.
John K. Madsen of Mount Pleasant Utah lauds as best Rambouillet bucks breeder in the United States visits Del Rio for the Ozona sale this week. His buck stock has led markets 11 years and he plans to attend Salt Lake City sale in August after summer Western sales.
In Ogden Utah on June 30 Adam Snyder 62 and his wife Mabel 52 were beaten to death with a pick handle. Mrs Scott Rose 80 Snyder's mother in law also beaten and not expected to live. Grace Mortensen 35 a Salt Lake City visitor was badly cut and bruised. Betty Becker 8 Snyder's granddaughter witnessed the slayings. Police seek George Mortensen for questioning.
Paris reports W B Allen of Cunningham Lamar County 47 year old Baptist minister and farmer has achieved his nineteenth child. Nine children are with his present wife and ten with his first wife who died in 1925. Sixteen children are living.
The Railroad Commission authorized Texas gas production of 1,478,533 cubic feet daily for the next month. This marks an increase of 934,400 cubic feet per day over the June quota.
Monday night and Tuesday morning saw no rainfall in the district but the United States Weather Bureau at Del Rio predicted possible thundershowers for Del Rio and vicinity Tuesday night and Wednesday. Eagle Pass endured a deluge with 16.27 inches of rain on Sunday and Monday, causing Elm Creek to overflow across Highway 85 and closing the road north of Eagle Pass. Las Moras Creek rose but recommenced traffic by Monday afternoon, while Highway 85 was closed to Eagle Pass at noon Tuesday and reopened Tuesday afternoon. Communications with Quemado Valley were restored Monday afternoon after earlier outages. Eight inches of rain fell into the vast irrigation canal with no reported damage. San Pedro Creek on Highway 30 threatened but did not halt travel and had receded by Tuesday.
Division engineer W. D. Dockery of State Highway Division 22 returned Monday from Brownwood where he attended a meeting of Texas highway officials. Gibb Gilchrist, state engineer, led the session with division engineers and assistants from 25 divisions in attendance through Sunday.
Among Del Rio’s antique possessions a wall clock owned by Mrs. G. T. Turner at 200 East Fifth Street still keeps perfect time with no repairs or cleaning ever done. The clock, once in Judge Roy Bean’s saloon, was given in 1902 by the Bean family. Patented September 1, 1885 by E Ingram Company Bristo Conn features a 13 inch circular case and a pendulum in a 7 inch case connected by a carved wooden strip.
The state highway department completes and occupies new division offices including an office building warehouse blacksmith shop and carpenter shop southeast of San Angelo serving 14 counties. Investment exceeds 50000 with annual payroll and operating expenses about 300000. Earl Beavers is resident engineer and A F Mourland division engineer.
Owens Haynes, a Southwestern Bell Telephone cableman born in June WH, was charged with murder in the death plunge of 23 year old Jeta Mae Tekle on Sunday. He posted a 1500 dollar bond and was released.
Luke Trammel and Forrest Gibson escapees from Retrieve Prison Farm abduct Hugh Pogue 14, near Buck Creek Texas. They release him in Reed Oklahoma after hijacking his car and firing at a gas tank. Sheriff F D Anderson identifies the fugitives as sought by Oklahoma officers.
Sonora reports goat breeder B. M. Halbert achieved his long campaign to place the term chevon in the dictionary. G C Merriam Company notified him that chevon is entered in Webster's New International Dictionary, second edition, defined as the flesh of the goat used as food.
Twelve men and Dayton Dean faced arraignment in Cir circuit court for the slaying of Charles A Poole in Detroit. They stood mute and entered pleas of innocence, held without bail for trial.
Ross Payne district 15 supervisor based in Del Rio says about 1 900 applications have been sent from 11 counties including Val Verde Edwards Real Zavala Frio Maverick Medina Uvalde Dimmit Kinney and LaSalle. By Monday 520 approval notices had been mailed from the Del Rio office though not all approvals are issued yet.
Cincinnati June 30 The United States Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the National Labor Relations Board had no authority to issue orders to firms whose business does not directly impact interstate commerce. The court dismissed the board’s enforcement petition against Fruehaus Trailer Company of Detroit and set aside the order. The company challenged NRSA constitutionality in the appeal.
Mirabeau B. Lamar home reproduction opens for inspection as part of the county’s centennial observance. The Texas education pioneer’s house is recreated in Texas colonial style, funded locally with a Texas Centennial commission grant, and situated on State Highway 24.
James D Britt furrier of Stevens Point Wisconsin was sought for questioning in the murder of Mrs Florence Thompson Castle 24 who was beaten to death in a Chicago hotel room yesterday.
