Pat M. Neff chairing the State Parks Board visited Del Rio en route to Big Bend to discuss reviving plans for a Devil's River state park. Funeral services for Sam B. Ogle two year old son of Mr and Mrs R A Ogle of Alpine were conducted at Doran's Funeral Home with Rev L B Gilbert officiating. Interment followed in West lawn Cemetery. Survivors include the parents two sisters Betty Ray and Margaret grandparents Rev and Mrs D R Dunham of Harper aunts and uncles in San Antonio Carrizo Springs Dryden and Del Rio.
The American Legion will not hold its regular meeting this week due to a Monday picnic at 6 30 PM. The Friday gathering was postponed as preparations, led by Julian LaCrosse with committee members I Burditt Leslie Cranfill and James C Netts, continue.
Philadelphia June 25. National Chairman James A Farley denied reports that Vice President Garner would be dropped from the ticket. Farley stated Roosevelt would be president and Garner would be the vice president nominee, while noting no favorite son movement was known. The question persisted among convention attendees.
Roosevelt signs 55 bills into law including a measure to expand the army air corps to four thousand planes with a five year buildup. The act also tightens penalties against strike breaking and protects peaceful picketing as Congress boosts air defense following Europe’s moves.
Philadelphia June 25 The Roosevelt rules committee voted 36 to 13 to abolish the two thirds nominating rule for Democratic conventions. Dissenting reports were delayed as delegates approved credentials and permanent organization reports. Joe Robinson of Arkansas elected permanent chairman as the convention adjourned until 8 p.m. Thursday.
All Del Rio stores will be closed on July 4 in celebration of independence day. Banks, the post office and all public offices will also remain closed. The Evening News will publish as usual.
In Philadelphia on June 25 Senator Tom Connally of Texas is set to head the speakers bureau for the Democratic national convention. If he accepts, he will assign speakers for the Roosevelt Garner ticket in all states. Connally attends the convention as Texas delegation chair and will be among the six who second Roosevelt's nomination.
W. 8. Stevenson of Del Rio participated as one of 10 000 delegates at the 27th Rotary International convention in Atlantic City which elected Will R. Manier Jr of Nashville Tenn as the new president. O. B. Sellers of Fort Worth was chosen to represent United States clubs on the international board. Manier won by acclamation. Rufus F. Chapin was re elected treasurer for a 26th term. W. W. Emerson of Winnipeg announced he will be succeeded by William Cairns of Toronto as Canadian director and the Canadian delegation would push to change Rotary rules to allow clubs in rural areas where there are no towns.
Praise for Dr. C. B. Qualia of Del Rio fills a Toreador editorial at Texas Tech. The former head of the foreign language department resigns to lead the romance languages department at the University of Kansas. The piece lauds his scholarship, translations, and popular teaching, and extends best wishes for his future work.
The $7,000,000 Maverick County irrigation project has been fully executed and approved by the Public Works Administration. A work order has been issued to the contractors and canal construction will commence in 10 days. Dr. W. E. McParland, president of the Eagle Pass Water Board, announced the development.

Hill sent principles to County Judge Clarence Herrefford detailing payments, practices, and administration under the Soil Conservation Act, with emphasis on keeping livestock off pastures during the growing season and on flexible, county tailored funding.
At the International Dardanelles conference in Montreux on June 45, Foreign Commissar Maxim Litvinoff announced the Soviet Union demands freedom of passage for its warships through the Dardanelles. He said the aim is to facilitate sinking Russia's naval bases in various seas. Turkey has asked the conference to allow rearming the strait. The move was seen as a warning of major European and Asian strategic stakes.
Light rainWednesday evening and night brought modest totals to Del Rio with .44 inches in 24 hours. Comstock reported 1.59 inches while McNeely trench north of Brackettville recorded 1.50 inches. Brackettville and Cline areas saw lighter amounts of rain.
Mrs. Ernest Herwig, 28, and her 9 year old son were killed with an axe yesterday at their farm home ten miles southwest of Johnson City. The woman’s husband and two daughters were in the garden when they heard a commotion and found the bodies in the bedroom. The investigation is ongoing.
