Harvey Dobbin, 48, former Del Rican and half-brother of Mrs. Andie B Gowen, was accidentally killed in Silver City New Mexico on Tuesday. A message from Mrs Gowens sister, Mrs J H Coleman, gave no death details. He served in France in World War I and later lived in Del Rio before moving to Silver City about six years ago. His wife died in Del Rio several years ago.
Del Rio fire chief F J Schmidt warned bystanders during a Wednesday fire in San Felipe at 504 Artiago Street. A small frame outhouse behind Paul Maldonado's home was destroyed by an undetermined origin blaze as crowds pressed near to watch and gasoline risked explosion.
J. R. Schiller, recently named supervisor in the USDA screw worm campaign, attends a short course at A and M College. He is brother of Mrs. Roger Gilkis. A federal appropriation over 300000 supports the work, while full scope of the campaign against blow fly and screw worm remains unrevealed.
Del Rio Fire Department members wore new fire caps and badges on Wednesday. The headwear and insignia were purchased with proceeds from the department’s May dance. Chief F. J. Schmidt credited friends for making the items possible.

Jesus Barragon 28, a taxi driver shot near midnight last Wednesday four miles east of Del Rio on Highway No 3, died Wednesday at 2 30 AM. He had been taken from Williams Sanitarium to the home of Sergio Gonzalez Sr. and died from throat wound with paralysis of the lower body. Barragon had been wounded in the shooting that killed Mrs Ysabel Hernandez Whittington and her ex-husband John W Whittington. Funeral services set for Wednesday at 6 PM at San Felipe Cemetery. Whittington’s burial followed last Thursday. County attorney Douglas Newton serves as temporary administrator of Whittington’s estate.
Williams Spiritualistic Singers of the Edmonston Institute and Orphanage in Athens Texas perform Thursday at 8:30 pm in the Del Rio High School auditorium. The program features Negro spirituals and jubilee melodies with “Old Black Joe” dramatized and songs like “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” and “Old Time Religion.” No admission charged. The balcony is reserved for the colored community.
William Green of the AFL proposed a constitutional amendment requiring a two thirds vote to declare laws unconstitutional. Democratic platform makers presented the demand in Philadelphia on June 24, while Roosevelt era leaders appeared unlikely to back the change, arguing the constitution is already broad enough for New Deal objectives.
Mrs Violet McTurk a 27 year old Englishwoman says she has run a gold trading post for four years in the wilds of British Guiana. She arrived in Boston aboard the Lady Nelson and described taking over her husband Mick McTurk’s business after his death in an accident. She reports natives agreed to trade with her and that her post 200 miles inland from Demerara handled goods from rum to ammunition.
Del Rio records 0.42 inches of rain Wednesday morning between 7 45 and 8 30 oclock. Quemada Valley Loma Alta and Baker s Crossing on Devil s River report one half inch while Brackett ville Spofford Rocksprings and Comstock show no rain. Temperature fell from 79 to 66 during the shower. Thursday forecast calls for partly cloudy skies.
The Rev. James F. Black, now pastor in San Benito, has an article in the Mercedes booklet Sunshine Messenger. It notes Z. D. Barber, formerly Quinlan Boles Orphan Home manager, now leads Sunny Glen Orphan Home three miles east of Mercedes and two miles west of La Feria.
Miss Blanche McComb president of the Texas Business and Professional Women's Clubs died Tuesday night at 10 30 in the M and S Hospital San Antonio Funeral services are planned for Thursday She was in Del Rio when the local charter was presented two years ago and visited here in November 1935 for a Governor Allred banquet hosted by Miss Faye Dobkins and Mrs Cathryn Wayman

An explosion at the Compressed Air Line Trico Products Corporation plant in Buffalo killed one man and injured 15 others. Sparks from a loose metal piece were blamed for the blast.
MEXIA June 24 Officers admit two Retrieve Farm escapees Luke Trammell and Forrest Gibson may have fled the area after escaping Friday. Sheriff Will Adams leading the search believes they possibly slipped away by car along a back road near the Navasota River bottoms.
