Five Del Ricans received $50 awards at the last buck night event at the local theatres Thursday evening. The prizes were awarded without state tax to Miss Anna Jo Meredith, Mrs. J. Turney Terrell, Mrs. J. L. Geer, Mrs. Alfred Nash and Carl Stephens.
Gaston Doumergue, 73, former president and twice premier of France, died at his native Aigues-Vives village. His death followed heart disease, after ending his second term as premier in November 1934. He had led France through turmoil and the Sta visky scandal era, earning the nickname Gastounet and guiding a national cabinet in a rare cross-party truce. He married Jeanne Grave shortly before leaving the presidency.
The Rev R Anderson Jardine, who defied church authorities to perform the Windsor marriage ceremony, announced his resignation to the Darlington congregation and said he will lecture in the United States. He and his wife are shown in the garden at their daughter’s home in Letchworth.
Rev Martin Neimoeller charged more than 50 pastors of the Confessional Synod were arrested under Nazi rule. He said most were arrested after 1933 and many remained jailed until a new wave of arrests recently. In Canada Major Genet reported Soviet aviators launched a Moscow to San Francisco flight, with Soviet officials in Seattle denying word.
Treasury investigator Elmer L Ivey told lawmakers that Charles Laughton reduced taxes by diverting Hollywood earnings to a British company a move he said may be legal but undermines U S tax laws Ivey had named other capitalists who avoided U S taxes by foreign corporations including Jacob Schick former army colonel and razor magnate now Canadian citizen
Philip Murray, head of the Steel Workers' Organizing Committee, testified before the Senate post office committee and urged that leaders of the union summon the four companies involved in the Midwest to obtain a complete picture of the strike.
Washington June 18 Senate leaders backed a compromise relief amendment proposed by Senator Joe Robinson. The plan requires local sponsors to contribute 25 percent of project costs, replacing Senator Byrnes 40 percent proposal. Robinson said the provision would safeguard treasury credit and empower the President to proceed with needed projects if locals cannot pay.
Cameron County commissioners authorize Tax Collector Ralph T Agar to assess all personal property at its January 1 1937 actual value to prevent bias against real estate values. The move aims to raise property evaluations as delinquent taxes near two million dollars. County Judge O C Dancy pushes an intensive collections drive amid accusations landowners had funds but unpaid taxes for years.
In San Angelo June 18, buyers remained active as 36 cent wool was reported from Port Stockton with eight and twelve month lots selling slowly. Notable transactions included Joe B Blakeney warehouse eight months at 36 cents, Mrs Coke Westbrook twelve months at 35 1 2 cents, and Peterson and Company eight months around 34 35 cents. Mohair contracts floated in Rocksprings while lamb and mutton prices held firm with H C Noelke locking 3 000 lambs at 5.20 a head and Rocksprings mutton yearlings near 40 a head.
Sir James Barrie the renowned English author and dramatist, aged 77, is reported in grave condition. Doctors in a London nursing home say he is critically ill with bronchial pneumonia.
About 3,000 witnessed the Rocksprings rodeo and races on Thursday with expectations of a larger Friday crowd. The three day event opened Wednesday and included parades free barbecues moonlight dances and races. Jack Sellers of Del Rio won the calf roping contest on Wednesday in 19.4 seconds. Association president F A Moody secretary C H Gilmer arena director Frank Cloudt and Ivan Smart organized the festivities. Thirty ropers and 23 bronc riders entered the events. Local residents and visitors attended the celebration for races rodeo and dances.
In Austin the legislature moved toward final action with approval of race wagering and a bi that was needed today. Both Houses met on Monday as the special session continued. Bills awaiting Senate approval were approved yesterday, signaling near completion of a lengthy schedule.
In Los Angeles Jean Harlow’s mother Mrs Jean Bello appears as sole beneficiary in her probate will. The estate is valued at over ten thousand dollars with friends informally estimating up to one hundred thousand.
Mrs Mary Elizabeth Arledge 28, wife of Francis Arledge, died after tumbling from a bluff while her husband and 4-year-old son Bobby James searched for a cave near their Pandale area ranch. The accident occurred when she tripped on a rock, and the family rushed her to a car but she never regained consciousness. Funeral planned Friday at Del Rio First Baptist Church with burial in Westlawn Cemetery. she was born March 21, 1909, and is survived by her husband, son, parents, a brother, and a sister.
A prairie fire destroyed about 300 acres of grass on the Wipff Ranch along Indio Road near Eagle Pass. Ten sheriff’s deputies aided by ranch hands fought the blaze for hours starting around 4 p.m. Tuesday, isolating it and keeping it under control by Tuesday evening. The fire’s origin remains undetermined as of Friday.
SANDERSON June 18 Bob Martin of Del Rio and Eagle Pass is leasing the Joe Kerr and Mrs B Dyer ranches and will engage a ranching business in Terrell if he purchases the y J Bursey sheep already on the Dyer range. He will stock the Kerr ranch with sheep moved from Val Verde County. Mr Martin, a member of the Texas Livestock Sanitary Board, also ranches in Maverick County and has extensive holdings in Val Verde County.
