Funeral services for eight month old Max Mills Jr. of Pandale were held Thursday at 10 o'clock in the Doran Chapel. Rev. L C Beasley officiated with interment in the Masonic Cemetery. The infant died in Laredo after a several day illness and was brought to Del Rio for burial. He was the grandson of H J Mills and a great nephew of Mrs. J L Barnes.
Washington notes a broad new corporate and dividend tax plan nearly ready for final congressional action. Conferees agree on controversial points and leaders hope for no further delays as adjournment nears. The compromise would raise the normal corporate tax to 15 percent and the undistributed income levy to 27 percent, aligning with the original House bill more closely than earlier proposals.
Authorities closed the investigation into inventor E McFarland Moore’s murder in East Orange New Jersey. Ballistics linked the fatal shot to a gun later used by Jean Philipp Gebhardt in his own death at New Monmouth. Moore’s daughter said the body resembled the stranger who visited the home.
Jas C Netts manager of the Val Verde Chamber of Commerce urged all Del Rio business establishments to report 1935 operations to the Census Bureau. Enumerators R H Chalk and Mrs R A Johnson will collect data. reports are confidential and will be destroyed after compilation. Census will publish totals. census work closes July 1.
Texas range conditions are the best since 1932 according to USDA statistics. Cattle ranges on June 1 stood at 85 percent of normal, sheep 90, and goats up four points from 1935. Generally good rains in May boost summer and fall grazing, though some Northwest Panhandle areas show subsoil moisture shortage.
War veteran Harry Olson is charged with involuntary manslaughter after his allegedly drunken driving killed his elderly mother during a "bonus celebration." The incident occurred in Salt Lake City as Olson faced the charge. The report also notes congressional action on a large relief appropriation bill and a line about a Florida canal revival.
Sidney Cauthorn son of Mr and Mrs Bob Cauthorn suffered a broken rib and other injuries when a saddle strap broke causing him to fall from his horse while roping goats last week. He is able to be around again at this time.
Judge C. K. McDowell, a leading county Republican, returns from the Republican National Convention in Cleveland saying the gathering was harmonious. He praises the ticket and believes the nominees have a good chance to win. He has gone to San Angelo to bring home Mrs. McDowell.
Willie Sue Blagden announced she would press flogging charges against six men at Earle for an alleged attack on her and Rev. Claude Williams. She promised to identify them but will wait for Farmers Union cotton crop strike talks to conclude.
A federal judge granted Eagle-Picher mining and smelting companies a temporary injunction preventing the Federal Relations Board from holding hearings on labor practices complaints. Judge Franklin Kennamer noted the Wagner Act not applicable as mining and smelting were not interstate commerce. ruling on constitutionality was not made.
Texas oil production may be reduced. At the Railroad Commission hearing Chairman Ernest O Thompson warned operators of a slight U S Bureau of Mines rise in July demand while noting continued drilling across Texas wells boosting production.
Del Rio and surrounding area expect fair conditions tonight and Friday. Yesterday’s high reached 96 degrees, with a low around 76. This morning’s low was 71 as heat remains prevalent.
Douglas Newton newly appointed county attorney for Val Verde County is asked to respond to a murder case at midnight. District Attorney Julian LaCrosse urges him to act quickly, prompting Newton to chase the scene with Sheriff Steinmetz and Judge Aderhold joining moments later.
A mob stormed Wharton and Bay City jails seeking nine Black suspects in Deputy Sheriff Tip Simmons slaying at El Campo cafe. The group fired the cafe and dispersed after attempting to lynch. deputies moved the arrestees to an unnamed jail.
State milk inspector F D Brock praised Del Rio dairies after finding an unusually low bacterial count and high butter fat in Grade A milk. Brock, with Dr Geo W Cox, noted counts as low as 2000 per cc and said Del Rio rivals the best in the state. Dr York praised sanitary supervision as well. Del Rio to be placed on the dairy honor roll in July.
Paris reports France cannot take or share leadership of lifting sanctions on Italy yet will back Britain at Geneva. The government welcomes the move but Premier Blum's socialist principles restrain France from full participation.
In San Francisco on June 18 Albert Walter Jr 28 of New York was charged with the silk stocking strangling of Blanche Cousins an Idaho girl who resisted his advances.
Russian novelist Maxim Gorky died in Moscow at age 68. Born Alexis Maximovitch Pyeshkov in 1868, he rose from poverty and varied jobs to lead Soviet anti-government propaganda and pioneering literature, with exile periods and an infamous 1896 America visit.
Chicago June 18 Frank Knox Republican nominee for vice president said he was greatly impressed with Governor Alf Landon’s wholesome sane attitude on public questions and credited Landon with much poise and understanding upon returning from the Topeka conference.
Paris reports that officials of the American Hospital surrendered to union demands, ending a walkout by employees after the French government declined to eject the strikers.
At about 11 30 p m Wednesday night an affray four miles east of Del Rio on Highway No 3 left John W Whittington 55 and his former wife Ysabel Hernandez Whittington 60 dead and taxi driver Jesus Barragon wounded in the throat Barragon in Williams Sanitarium gave details that the couple hired him to drive to the scene and returned with him to town
Jesus Barragon, a taxi driver injured in a shooting four miles east of Del Rio late Wednesday night, was reported in critical condition Thursday afternoon. The bullet entered his throat and deflected from the vertebra causing paralysis of the lower body. Earlier the wound was not thought dangerous until after a complete exam.
Barragon reports Whittington asked him to stop four miles east of Del Rio. A shooting left Barragon wounded in the throat and Whittington dead in the car. Mrs. Whittington lay slain in the back seat. Five empty cartridges, a reloaded pistol, and a pending inquest cloud the case. Bonus bonds and a beer parlor deal are noted as possible motives.
