J. B. Gillett age 80 author of Six Years a Texas Ranger died in Temple Friday evening from a heart ailment. He had resided in Marfa and was widely known. Survivors include his widow two daughters Mrs Wilson of Ozona and Mrs Lee Evans of Albuquerque and a son M. E Gillett of Marfa. Funeral services were held in Marfa Sun Gay.
The Department of Agriculture reported that wool sales in Sydney closed June 10 with inferior fleece and low skirtings 5 percent lower than the opening of the series on June 7. Best descriptions were down 5 percent, other descriptions 10 percent, with unchanged prices on many lots and small late transactions noted.
Thomas F. Conroy announces he will resign Saturday as U S Marshal for the Western District of Texas headquarters in San Antonio. The departure ends a 29 year tenure created by the spring 1945 appointment amid rising office workload. Conroy previously worked in advertising in San Antonio and Chicago before moving here in 1931.
Reports say insurgent forces pushed toward Bilbao from the Iron Ring while loyalist troops and air raids beat back assaults. Basque defenders delayed the advance with stubborn resistance as civilians faced bombardment near the city on the Nervion Bay.
A Black suspect linked to a Friday night public safety incident was chased to a ranch in Sonora County and captured Saturday by a posse of 10 officers led by Sut ton County sheriff. Coleman’s sister worked on the ranch where he fled. he is known in Del Rio for rodeo performances.
