A massive TNT blast at the Aetna Chemical plant in Oakdale near Pittsburgh devastates the east coast plant. Officials report 170 dead and over 400 injured. The cause remains unknown as rescue teams battle fires. a second explosion at 1:53 p.m. hit the TNT building. Weather for Illinois noted as generally fair tonight and Sunday.
Hiland Brothers have had a large force at work this week decorating the corner of Second and Lincoln Highway, formerly R. N. Leslie, and setting new plate glass windows. Interior repairs on the burned building near completion, with occupancy expected in a week or two. Two stores now, divided by a partition during repairs.
DeKalb township residents are urged to attend a mass meeting at the Armory tomorrow night marking the opening of the Red Cross drive in DeKalb. The drive runs Monday through next Saturday with a $9,000 goal for the township. Company A and other locals are serving along the battle lines in France. The program at eight includes invocation by Rev J O Randall, music by Barth City quartette, address by Prof S J Vaughn, singing by the Barb City quartette, an address by Sergeant Marsh on front line experiences, and the national anthem.
United Press war expert J W T Mason argues American troops in France will number about 1 150 000 by year end and that training with French and British forces will push a major American offensive to next spring. He cautions Foch will avoid premature actions and notes autumn remains uncertain due to weather while predicting a large allied push in spring.
New York May 18 President Wilson altered plans to review the Red Cross parade and led the head of the procession down Fifth Avenue for part of the distance before stopping at the reviewing stand, then returning by automobile as the last divisions marched. The program also promotes a Saturday special cinema offering with Ma bel Normand and Tom Moore in The Floor Below, a comedy drama. Performances begin at 7 15 with prices 15c for adults and 10c for children.
Washington May 18 General Pershing released a casualty list totaling 39. It reports 3 killed in action 3 dead of wounds 4 due to disease 5 severely wounded 9 slightly wounded 1 with unknown severity 12 missing in action and 2 prisoners previously listed missing. Illinois names include Edward C Carter James C Pipes Joe Schroeder and Lieutenant Sherman DeMore among the wounded and missing.
Very few empties were found at the police station this week. A local wagon driver reported no milk bottles available for coffee for boarders and sleepers. Judge Glidden notes it is the first time in many years that the milkman called for empties and found none.
William Powell of DeKalb filed for divorce in circuit court on Wednesday citing a March 10 1917 Sycamore marriage and separation on January 15 that year. He accuses Lucy Powell of adultery and notes she was recently committed to the Geneva State Home for Girls.
London dispatch notes mutual artillery exchanges between Givenchy and Ro becq with enemy activity near Dens Hazebrouck and Ypres. Paris reports violent fighting north of Avre and German raids failing near Mas Siges and Four de Paris. Rome states Allies destroyed over 100 enemy planes on the Italian front in 30 days.
Amsterdam May 18 Count Von Hertling German chancellor expresses optimism for peace this year noting progress on the western front. He says Germany and Austria seek to harmonize actions, that an international peace league could include Germany, and that present conditions hinder such a league as they fight for existence and lasting peace.
Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Martin mother of Ira and Clem Lathem of DeKalb will be held tomorrow at 2 30 PM at the Lathem home on North Sixth Street Rev W R Yard officiating. The remains will be buried in Elmwood Cemetery Sycamore. Her wish to be buried in Sycamore rather than Ohio was honored.
A large audience attended the Sherman Stock Company performance in the tent last night. Hubbard delivered rapid humor, timing jokes about every ten seconds for two hours, leaving the crowd amused throughout the show.
United Press reports in Picardy on May 17 that over 30 decorations were issued to Americans. Major Rasmussen of Oregon received a posthumous award for trying to save papers under bombardment. Major Paddock of Nebraska and 22 signal corps soldiers earned honors for maintaining links under heavy fire. Several men aided wounded comrades amid wreckage while an ambulance driver stayed with the injured until all were killed. Elsie Mosher, a DeKalb trader, was noted. Jitney Dance, Armory tonight.
DeKalb county exemption board calls 25 more draft age men for departure next Thursday morning from Sycamore to Jefferson Barracks Missouri for likely training. The list includes Tyan Grimm Hinckley Arthur Sullivan Clare Bergeméister Sandwich Harry Joslin Clare Herbert Eldred Somonauk and others from DeKalb Kingston Hinckley Genoa Moline Rockford Russville and Cortland with several local towns represented.
Springfield Illinois May 18 Stanley Stack convicted in Cook County of murder in a bank robbery case is denied a commutation of sentence by Governor Lowden on the pardons division recommendation. Other denials include George Walker Barnes Chicago actor for murder, Anthony Black and Matthew Stein for murder in Will County, Will Terwilliger for murder in Kane County with a 14 year sentence, Selmon Abbott in Madison County with 14 years, and Sidney Baker in Madison County with a murder conviction.
Board announces a change in the volunteers leaving Monday for Uncle Sam service as railroad engineers. Harry Horton of DeKalb, Bennie Staff of Sycamore, and Nicholas Fagan of Ottawa are listed, with Horton replacing John McMenamin of DeKalb. Linemen headed for Leon Springs Texas include Rosse E Shoop Oliver Vickery Hugh White Fred Booth J L Herman son Louis W Moulton Will Kaesser of DeKalb and Erwin Patterson of Genoa. They depart Broamore Monday noon at 12 01 for Chicago and then to the south.
Floyd Boyes, formerly chief clerk of American Express in DeKalb, now with the Peru unit, is spending a few days here with relatives. He says Peru’s express business is strenuous and keeps him busy. He will stay over Sunday before returning to resume work with the company.
Dave Anderson formerly with Henaughan's and based in Waukegan, will open a business in Hancock Michigan. He visited DeKalb after Chicago and Lansing state undertaker exams, aiming to start his new venture at the beginning of the coming month.
Township chairman Wright appeals for immediate return of pledge cards to reveal township progress toward the 191,000 quota for War Savings Stamps. He reports ward committees secured many pledges and that most residents have responded well to the government loan program.
Lieutenant Eddie Rickenbacker, former auto racer, fought three German planes near the American lines. He attacked a lone flyer, survived a collision that tore the German keel off, and limped home with a damaged wing after the enemy plane briefly tried to disguise itself with French insignia.
Circuit court will meet next Monday after Saturday adjournment, with Judge Carnes presiding. A few orders will be entered and the term is likely to adjourn after completion. The June term begins Monday, June 3.
