Republican Senator Charles S. Deneen of Chicago will address a DeKalb audience at the Egyptian Theatre shortly before 2:30 PM then speak at Yorkville at 4:00 PM. His Illinois campaign is brief due to Senate duties in Washington, with the April 8 primary looming in two weeks.
Ronald Galbraith son of Mr and Mrs Graham Galbraith former DeKalb residents visited DeKalb yesterday as his plane developed trouble and forced him to land near Aurora Virgil and between DeKalb and Cortland Temporary repairs by Wilbur Thatcher allowed the craft to be flown to the airport overnight The Galbraith party then traveled to Janesville Wis after accompanying the plane crew back to DeKalb County this morning for necessary repairs and return flight.
Work has begun on an oil station to be built on North Fourth street along Route 23. Smith Oil Co. will operate the station at the southeast corner of Fourth and Osk streets after a permit from the city department of public works.
The Chronicle will relay the final score of the Waterman versus Beardstown basketball game from Champaign this evening. A Chronicle staffer will phone the office with the score and details around 8 45 PM after the 8 30 PM game end, with a full report in tomorrow night’s edition. Call 253 for scores.
Washington March 20 40R Prohibition Commissioner P M Doran warned that a new bootleg concoction based on isopropyl alcohol can paralyze the legs and render drinkers unconscious. He noted isopropyl is related to wood and grain alcohols and not supervised by the treasury. He cited paralysis cases across several states and suggested Jamaica ginger as a possible source.
Duval County sheriff said it received information that Al Capone was aboard the Dorchester liner due to arrive in Jacksonville at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. Sheriff Cahoon sent a wireless query to the ship master to check the passenger list. A steward reportedly recognized Capone, who is said to have boarded in Baltimore on Tuesday.
The forecast warns of a cold wave across Illinois tonight with temperatures dropping to about 20 degrees above zero. Wind chill may intensify the feel, and residents are urged to bundle up and limit exposure.
Iowa Senator Smith W Brookhart faced a hostile crowd of about 2000 at Mecca Temple in New York as he defended temperance and warned that the nation will soon drink less. Clarence Darrow attacked prohibitionists and other groups, mocking Hoover and posing sharp rebukes to political leaders.
Chicago and the wheat belt face storage pressure as grain bins fill. The Farmers' National Grain Corporation announces loans and erection of additional elevators through cooperative associations to relieve bottlenecks. Existing loan schedules authorize gains for grain merchandising and facility expansion.
Milo Wolfe of Babson Manufacturing told local dairy farmers that hard times arise from an oversupply of dairy products. He cited stores selling high oleo to butter, surplus milk from nonproductive cows, and many cows culled last month as signs of pressure on prices and farm finances.
A. C. Bryans and Paul Husted spoke at multiple city and Sycamore schools to educate pupils on street and railway crossing safety. They promoted a nine year campaign, citing fatalities and injury stats, and outlined three planks: protect own life, protect others, and set a good example for youths.
Circuit court in Sycamore convened with Judge William J. Fulton. No jury due to an order delaying petit juries until April 14. Harry Sarbaugh pleaded not guilty to forgery with trial set for April 15. John Miller, accused in a 1928 confidence scheme, pleaded not guilty. trial set for April 21. Court adjourned until April 10.
Washington March 20 The drys press a proposal by Chairman Wickersham to shift prohibition enforcement from the federal to the state level. Witnesses including Tom Daniel former secretary of the navy and Samuel Crowther urge giving states cities more enforcement duty to spur action, though wet states worry lack of state Acts complicates the move.
The annual meeting of the township auditors will be held next Tuesday afternoon March 25 at 4 00 o clock at the DeKalb Trust Savings bank. Town Clerk Roy Duncan said the board includes the township supervisor the town clerk and five justices of the peace. The treasurer’s books will be audited and all township bills acted upon. The board will also appoint the thistle commissioner for the coming year.
District Commander William Run nells and District Adjutant Julius Silverman left De Kalb for St Charles to join a caravan to Rockford where National Commander Bodenhamer spoke that night. De Kalb Boone Winnebago counties report strong membership. Grundy Kendall counties show good gains. twelfth district is the largest outside Cook.
A Deland Florida jail wire says Merle Stiles is being held to answer several charges with hearings and trial to follow. DeKalb county authorities will be notified of results and local action depends on them. Stiles, arrested in Deland, is also wanted in DeKalb on forgery and in Kane county on a similar charge. He had escaped from DeKalb jail on February 13.
City hall reports 750 vehicle tax plates issued in De Kalb for 1930 with police yet to begin the annual drive. Based on last year’s numbers, at least 900 autoists remain who must visit the city clerk to obtain licenses, indicating less than half are currently licensed.
Daniel C. Roper former internal revenue commissioner urged the Hoover administration to convene governors and form citizen law observance councils to enforce laws. He criticized Canada’s liquor control plan as ineffective for nationwide prohibition and cited South Carolina’s 1992 trial.
Alderman August Anderson of the fourth ward will run in the city election on April 15 on the Citizens ticket after not filing for the primary. Phillip Oberg also filed under Citizens in the fifth ward. George Culver is nominated Republican. Contests loom in wards one three with Hiland Hartman in ward one and Stone Coyne in ward three.
Governor L L Emmerson spoke before farm and utility leaders on March 20 arguing Illinois tax policy is unfair to farmers and must shift to evenly distribute the cost of government. He warned of urban poverty and farm credit limits, urged a program linking farm needs with electric service expansion, and called for reform of a tax system he called out of date and hard to administer.
Chicago and North Western railroad officials L A Clapp J H Bratton and E V Shottwell arrived for a conference with City Attorney DeEstin Pasley to plan enhanced crossing protection for DeKalb. They oppose watchmen and cite a prior verbal 25 mph limit past Fourth Street. They pledge cooperation and say speed will stay down until city directs otherwise.

A long missing husband and father from St Louis is revealed in a probate case over a $25 000 estate settled in Lyons Illinois. The man disappeared after an after dinner walk in 1897 leaving five children and later died there. A sister finally disclosed his whereabouts leading to settlement in probate court.
